Don't feel too bad. It's easy to do. I dinged my front rim last year and gashed the sidewall of my tire on a curb making a U-Turn. You can't drive in FL without making sharp U-Turns all the time because they put median's on every road which makes it impossible to turn against traffic. It's one of the things I hate most about Florida.
Ouch! I've yet to do that to the RAV, but I've sure done it on other vehicles. I actually had some luck in the past with rubbing some of those out with polishing compound. At least it knocked off the worst of the rough edges and made it less noticeable.
I've come very close to doing that on several occasions - mostly in parking lots where I've parked next to a curb which was parallel to the parking spot, and when I've returned to the vehicle I've forgotten that the curb was there when I drove off and then turned into it . . . . Ding, dong!
Let us know how the mobile wheel repair works out.
The repair guy called back. He is not located locally and said that it was not worth the round trip for a single repair of $125. Disheartening but it's business and I understand. He has other car lot customers here so he is going to call around and see if they need some repairs to make it worth his while. If that's a no go I'll drive to meet him somewhere that works for both of us.
EDIT: Found OEM refurb on ebay for $131 shipped so I may go that route depending on his phone call.
Minor update........I called the repair guy three times a day until I got hold of him, I was determined
I offered him $150 to come do the job which should be Monday he says (hopefully). The only reman wheel I could find was $131 shipped and who knows what I would really end up with? Add to that the cost of moving tire & TPMS from old wheel to new then balancing and it comes out to damn near $150. Then I end up with the damaged wheel in the garage forever to boot.
I know the wheel I have now is good, just damaged by a maroon so I feel it's worth the extra $25 for him to come to me. Also no balancing required because the tire is not removed just deflated. Time frame is estimated at 60-90 minutes for the repair which I will spend inside in the air conditioning. You really don't go outside down here this time of year unless you just have to.
Now......I'll see if he actually calls on Mon. or not.
Thanks, I'll be sweating it out come Monday. Unfortunately there is NO other choice down here other than putting on the steelie, removing the tire from the damaged rim, and shipping it off for repair. Then do the remount, balance, etc., etc., all over again.
They FINALLY came and repaired my wheel today. It looks as new so I'm pleased so far. The fella advised I leave it outside for the day to allow our lovely tropical temps and the sunlight to dry and cure paint/clearcoat.
As you can see below there is a cold front coming in on Weds.......hopefully the paint will still dry alright .
I don't know what they did. It was too miserably hot & humid to stand about and watch.
Congrats - good to hear that the repair went well. Can you post a pic?
Interesting that your weather forecast is for cooler weather than that for inland Oregon (100+)!
I doubt I'll post a picture, it looks just like the other three now and we've all seen them. I'll evaluate it more closely in another day or two.
Are you dealing with 70% and above humidity? That's what puts me down. Keep in mind we deal with this 9-10 months of the year. If we had the money we'd go to Minn for the summer and here for the winter.
Here's the boo boo fixers in action. I opened the front door and shot this with my phone. No photo awards, that's for sure. Note the black RAV4 across the street (click & enlarge) and my white one behind the trailer.
Thanks jacek but my '08 doesn't even have a parking lot ding so this was a real mind bender for me. I'm not the brightest spoon in the silver drawer but I HATE doing stupid $hit. See the pics at the beginning to view the damage if you haven't.
it happens to the best of us man, just let your guard down for 1 second and something happens...at least you can beat on these rims now knowing theyve been marred. or you can make them dedcated winter wheels with snow tires. another option is getting the wheels fixed, curb rash is very easy to fix.
Thanks for trying to make me feel better but........ Beat on the rims? The one I effed up was repaired to perfection, see the repair vehicles on previous page. Winter rims? Did you look where I live? Winter here is 40ºF at worst and it snowed once in the last 135 years! It got below freezing twice in the last nine years. I'd never heard of snow tires until I joined this forum.
Know what? Thanks!!! You really DID make me feel better :thumbs_up::thumbs_up::thumbs_up::

hahaha i totally forgot you were in TX! i hit a curb one time with my 19" racing hart c4's and know the feeling...the damage wasnt too bad but it was enough for me to feel stupid as hell but such is life.
