The Original Toyota RAV4 Was Better And More Important Than You Think

Patrick George on JALOPNIK
Today 5:56pm

Because it's stupid to throw away that kind of brand recognition, the modern Toyota RAV4 is a bloated, anonymous, mall-going crossover. Things weren't always that way. Opponaut HammerheadFistpunch is here to tell you why his first car, the original RAV4, was such a great example of how good Toyota is when they actually try.

Take a lovingly nostalgic trip down memory lane with Jalopnik!

I would go nutz for a mechanically updated, replica of the first RAV4, with a V6, of course! Might need rear drag bars, but I'm okay with that.

I would love one of those 3-doors in good condition. They always look like they're ready to drive to wherever the FUN is!!

Help RAV4World members help you by providing your car's operating location in your profile page. Climate can cause a RAV4 in Dallas Wisconsin to experience a different set of issues when compared to the same model in Dallas Texas.

I love my first gen RAV's to death!, I have driven an updated V6 RAV (Rev4.3) and it was fun, but just felt like a station wagon. any RAV Nut who has never driven a first gen RAV needs to give it a go!.

Given the issues that modern Toyota's have, I will be avoiding them and just keeping my first gen RAV's going!.

low KM first gen RAV's show up on Carsales from time to time, usually around the $8000 mark. but I love my Bluey, a RAV with 400,000km on the body, and a 100,000km engine and trans. great car, nothing goes wrong apart from the occasional lamp or flat tire.

My RAV4 has been with me thru thick and thin. When my son was always hungry and I wondered why? He was diagnosed with diabetic when he was four years old. I had to race to the hospital with him, he had a reading of 400+ in his four year old body, normal, was about 60. When no ambulance driver wanted to make the 45 minute trip because of the weather. My RAV4 was blasting me thru a lot of fallen trees and telephone poles, while a hurricane was passing thru the island. It saved my sons life, my only son. It will be with me forever. The old guys from this forum remember that one. Now the new guys know why I do, what I do so passionately when it comes to my RAV4. The only memory that I have of that time was when I was going to inject my son with insulin, he asked me; “Dad, when am I going to be cured” Those words are still in my mind and heart. Now you know.

For her, ONLY, the best always. New stuff, new rear wing spoiler.

They should go back to these models and once again dominate the market through sheer pricing. Could you imagine how many of these would be on the road if they were sold @ less than 18K? With America's incredible shrinking paycheck stage may be set to go back in time...Time travelling Rav4's anyone?

Which reminds me that some of the Euro RAV4s are shorter. True? How much shorter or smaller?

the first gen RAV4 chassis does not differ in other markets, its either 2dr or 4dr, just body trim, interior equipment, drive-train, and wheel options differ.
