Pre-collision system already saved me visit to a car service...

I already unintentionally tested the Toyota Safety Sense Pre-collision system. I just moved my eyes away from the road for a second because something was on the floor between my legs and all of a sudden the car hit the brakes on its own. The car in front of me suddenly stopped to give way to a pedestrian...
The central display was beeping and flashing in red and quite strong braking force was automatically applied (almost ejected through the windshield). But happily nothing bad happened. Without the help of the TSS I would rear-end without any doubt...

Thanks to this cool TSS it already saved me a lot of trouble...

Glad the system saved you. I could've used one on my Accord due to a similar close call last summer. But does "almost ejected" mean you weren't wearing your seat belt?

Of course I used the seat belt. I just used a little exaggerated expression trying to show how strong the braking force was applied.

Yeah, I can imagine how it felt when you weren't expecting it. For that instant you were just a passenger who wasn't paying attention.

Hopefully it will save us in the future.

Just be mindful of cars behind us that could rear end our vehicle and cause whiplash issues.

You are right. Fortunately the car behind me was not that close... so I was lucky 2 times...

Thanks for your report. It is almost impossible to drive and not make a mistake from time to time. I'm enthused the pre-collision safety thingie is standard on the 2017. On a related note, inattentive driving due to texting and cell phone use is a scourge. The pre-collision system WILL become the industry standard in the near future and hopefully begin to mitigate that to some extent.

As close as some people follow these days I think getting rearended will be the new problem since every autobraking stop will be a panic stop potentially causing more chain reaction crashes.

Almost had one just today. Wife and I were coming home from lunch in the RAV4 in snow but with little accumulation at the time. On a two lane road a Honda Civic coming the other way lost control spinning around as it slid toward us. Not knowing how far it would come I hit the brakes hard enough to activate the ABS. Then after the Civic stopped in the center of the road but headed the other (our) direction I drove up closer to it. My wife asked why I pulled forward. I said to give the pickup behind us more room to stop. He stopped okay but I saw a car behind him start to come around the pickup, possibly because he couldn't see why the pickup stopped abruptly and couldn't get stopped in time himself. As the Civic drove off and pulled into the next driveway I noticed his tracks showed very little tread, probably the cause of his trouble because no one else was having traction issues.

What is the condition to trigger auto braking? I managed to get the red brake varning a few times when changing lanes close to others.
