Greetings . . . I am in the process of adapting a Gentex Auto-Dim Mirror with Homelink to my XLE. I found a source for the constant +12v source to power the Homelink in the overhead area. However I can't seem to find a switched +12v source for the auto dim. (I know i could run a lead from the dash area, but that would be way harder than grabbing something in the overhead.) Can someone who has already done this point me to the wire lead I need? I know they have already found them in the overhead area for Rav4.3 but that doesn't seem to be the case with our 4.4. Thanks.
UPDATE: I found the +12v switched. It is indeed in the connector for the sunroof motor controller assy. It is colored Black located right next to the Blue +12v constant wire. on one side of the connector. The white wire w/black stripe is Ground. See pic.
There should already be a wired connector up there that's taped down for potential auto dim mirror upgrade, look inside with a flash light or poke around with your index and you might find it. I know this because I found such a connector in my 2012. Unless they decide to leave it out in the 13.

I checked (and probed around) for extra connectors buried somewhere in the overhead console and headliner area, but didn't find anything. Would have been great if it was that easy.
I've already looked through those for the gen 4.3. The wiring harnesses and overhead console in general are different on the 4.4 so there is no applicability. I may just have to run a wire up from the dash or the fuse box area, but will wait until others have had a chance to chime in.
Yes, I have done that. I cannot find a specific post that relates to the switched +12v power source from the overhead console area. One member brought it in from the dash area (I believe he tapped off of the aux power port) and had to disassemble the A pillar plastics, etc. to get it up there. My thread was started to see if there is a simpler solution.
I went ahead and installed the mirror and for the time being just hooked up power to the Homelink portion and left the auto-dimming function for later. I am including pics of what I did. I tapped power off of the power connector to the overhead lights (left is ground and right is +12v constant, on the connector as it is plugged into the overhead console. The center wire is unknown.) I used telecom splicers as they are the correct size and are way smaller than automotive types. They will work fine in an interior low current application. I also included a pic of the underside of the overhead console. Those four red connectors plug into matching holes in the roof. Just pull firmly and they will let go without too much drama.
Now I will wait to hear if anyone has found an easy source for the switched 12v power needed for the auto-dim portion of the mirror.
Here you go, on the first picture labeled "Sunroof Controller" (post #9) use the black wire and the white/black. I forgot but I'm almost positive that the W/B is the ACC wire and the black the ground.
Those are the wires I used to setup my mirror with the homelink.
Does the sunroof work all the time or only when the ignition key is on? If the latter, then it must have a switched 12V line going to the control module.
I didn't know the op had a sunroof otherwise I would have already told him that the sunroof does indeed have switched power. I initially did this on my 2011. So yes, go ahead and tap from the sunroof. Btw, I'm talking about the games that plugs into the motor itself, not the one that plugs into the control buttons.
Yes I know all about the sunroof (motor) connector. That was the logical place to look as they found it there in the Rav4.3. However I only found constant 12v there. The motor controller or main ECU then must decide how to use it. The behavior of the sunroof is similar to the side power windows, works with key in ON position and remains working for a few seconds after the key is switched off. (Only question I have is did I do my power probing in that short time when the sunroof was still working after key OFF. I will recheck that and report.)
I assume current wiring is for the auto dimming only. What additional wiring will be required for the HomeLink portion for the replacement mirror? I will pull the mirror later in the week and have a look.
I paid an auto accessory store $45 to install my Gentex mirror with Homelink. He said it went very well. He had no trouble locating power for the mirror.
The only issue with my install was the lack of a wire cover. I didn't buy one with the mirror so I had to get one after the fact because the connector on the OEM cover wasn't compatible with the new mirror. Thankfully I was able to find one for $8 including shipping on ebay.
Delighted with my new mirror with Homelink - the biggest thing missing from my old car.
My Gentex mirror did not slide all they way down the mount on the windshield like the OEM mirror did. Even tapping with a hammer and wooden dowel it still won't go down as far as the OEM did. Anyone else notice this? The mirror is on solid, just stops short about 3mm compared to OEM.
Thanks for the responses. I purchased a new mirror with auto-dimming, homelink 5 (5 is new security level) and compass. Bonus backlit buttons. Dave pre-wired the connector so for me it was a simple plug n' play. Price was way below retail. I would recommend Dave who can be reached by email dave@dave57.net

I wonder if attaching the homelink power to a switched supply might not be a good idea? I always park in my garage so it's not a worry for me, but my neighbor's car was accidentally left unlocked in the driveway and the thief, besides rifling through and stealing stuff out of the car, used the homelink to open their garage door and rip off a flat screen TV they had in there, among other things. Had the HL been on switched power the crime would have been limited to the car.
The always on power for the Homelink portion of the mirror is the standard OEM configuration (for most cars so equipped). Of course it is a security risk if you park in your driveway and the same as leaving a standard garage remote in the vehicle. Feel free to power your mirror differently if that is a concern. I park inside my garage (uhh that is what it is for . . . so I wired it in the standard fashion. Personally, if I had to park outside the house, I wouldn't bother with Homelink and just use a remote and carry it inside the house.
My wife parks in the garage and a lot of , um, stuff, in there so I don't park there. When I had the pickup it wasn't really an option anyhow.
So what I decided to do, rather than keep the remote in my Rav4 or get the expensive mirror and mess around with installing it, is to get a remote Keypad from the garage door company and mount it to the wall outside the garage door. That way, the few times I need to go direct to the garage, I can just use that, plus the kids can use it too and close the garage when they are outside, helping to keep the feral cats out
I have a brand new (March 2013 Mfg. Date) Mazda mirror with Homelink-4 and compass. Purchased from dave@dave57.net for $184 He wired the connector so it was basically plug 'n play install. He handles new and used and was extreamly helpful.
Hello.
I bought OEM rear-view Auto-dimming mirror on e-bay.
Mirror has 7 Pin connector.
Does anybody know purpose of all those wires.. I would assume GND and +12V wires only... But, how to find them...
Great info on the installation/wiring of a Gentex mirror in the 2013 Rav4. Thanks to all.
I have a 2013 RAV4 Limited with sunroof and auto dimming mirror. I would like to replace it with a Gentex auto dimming / Homelink / compass / mirror. Which Gentex model would provide the best wiring option and fit the existing windshield mount?
Got some help from some great folks outside of Rav4world.com. Install was straightforward.
Surprised at the lack of response from this forum, especially with almost 3900 views.
Right? Logging into this forum just to post a snarky remark about how you got great help elsewhere, but not providing that information for other forum members is well, frankly, petty and childish. Seriously.
Sorry you interpreted my post as "snarky". There was no intent of malice in my post.
I feel that, since the people I contacted on EBay are not participants in this forum, it wouldn't be right for me to publicly post their contact information in this forum.
No worries. Apology accepted. But, it would be great if you posted the diagrams/instructions as well as a brief account of how you accomplished this (as well as which specific model # you used). We are all here to help each other.. give AND take. Thanks!
