I am so upset that my iPod Classic won't work in my new 2014 Toyota RAV4 that I am considering replacing the entire head unit with a after marker unit. Seriously, this would have been a deal breaker if I had know that my iPod wound't work. I had a old Kenwood in my old truck that worked fine, I buy a new Toyota and find out after the fact that it won't work.
Anyway, has anyone replaced their head unit? Will the back up camera and steering wheel controls still work? What did you replace it with?
That's lot of tunes, my friend. :smile I use USB sticks and change my music when I get tired of what's on there. No album art, however, but with the glare off the screen, and with these old eyes, I can't see it anyway.
Does anyone know why the iPod doesn't work on the 2014 Rav4? I'm curious.
I agree with the above comments. You will likely spend less money and far less headaches if you just purchase a newer ipod. I would never go back to a cable solution again after using my iPhone and Pandora over Bluetooth. The stock head unit makes it so easy to control and manage. On the rare occurrence, I'll pick up my phone and adjust a song or thumbs up/down.
After using my iPhone for so long, I'm not too up to date with "iPods", but I know the iPod touch has plenty of storage space for your songs and likely has most likely has Bluetooth.
I understand your frustration, but you will need to understand that old technology doesn't play nicely with new technology. When I got a new iPhone, I too would have had to deal with the fact most of my docks and sound units wouldn't be compatible, but hey! That's why they have Bluetooth!
What's most frustrating though is that they list the iPod Classic in the manual as being compatible with the system and while yes, it does play, it also resets itself randomly and the voice recognition is horrible. The Classic doesn't use Bluetooth, only USB cables. i'm most likely going to get an iPod Touch too, but what annoys me is that I'd replaced my iPod Classic with the same one but new (Apple replacement plan) for $150 after it died, assuming it was the device itself that was causing the problems. And it wasn't. And I only use mine for the car. So I'm going to get a used iPod Touch and see how it works out rather than get a new one for a lot more money.
I got a used 64GB 4th generation Touch on ebay for $184. I've been using it all week with no problems. It's everything I expected my Classic to be, except less than half the storage capacity. I had to trim down my playlist and I also have to maintain two different Ipod, one for home and one for car. Bummer. Really, this would have been a deal breaker for me, if I had known.
Oh, I hear you, I tested mine in the car before I bought it, and it worked fine, I tried everything. Then later on the voice commands started getting worse. So, yours hasn't reset itself like before? You don't have voice activated do you? Are you using it by USB?
Bluetooth doesn't keep the unit charged, so you still have to have a cable connected. Also the Ipod Classic is a current model, not some antique. I've seen $49 playback units that handle the Ipod Classic quite well, I don't think it's asking too much for my $28,000 vehicle to do the same.
This is strange.. We have both an old ipod "video" 30Gb (always connected) and my wife's ipod classic 160Gb (bought last christmas) and they work great on my 2014 LE (Canadian)...
I have the Classic 160GB too, I had one that was about 3 yrs old and was doing all this crap and then it died so I got a replacement one and it's doing the same stuff.
So do you have the voice commands in yours? That's really what my biggest issue is, her not understanding my playlist commands.
I do have voice recognition in the car although never tried it to control ipods (used it twice to call someone), I'll try this morning on my way to work and let you know
I don't know much about the 2013, so I don't know where the LE falls in the line, but that's weird that you can use it for the phone but not the iPod? Your iPod is attached via the USB right?
Thanks for trying, anyway! My friend has an iPod Touch, so I'm going to load the most troublesome playlists on there and try it and see if it works better, I'm hoping it's just a iOS system vs whatever the iPod system is and that's the difference.
