So while filling up at a gas station the other day, I noticed something stuck in the driver's side rear roof rail support. It was the black rubber insert that runs in the roof rain rail! it came almost completely out. I brought the car in to my dealer and they ordered a whole new piece, stating that when the rubber rails come out alot of times they dissort. When asked if going through a car wash could do this, tech said yes although mine was the first RAV they'd seen. Highlanders had this issue in the past. Guess no more auto car washes for me!

I had the same issue. Came out 3 different times ---all while in a car wash. Went to dealer this morning ---said he had seen it before and ordered new part.
was at dealer this AM and they reattached the rain rail rubber insert using adhesive. Will see how it goes at the next few car washes here in Wisconsin, as I attempt to keep record amounts of salt off the car.:)
cant wait for spring and warmer temps.

What are you guys doing taking your Ravs to car washes anyways?

Obviously swirls and scratches aren't a concern for those with New Vehicles.

I don't even let Toyota give me a Free wash because of what those brushes do to the paint.

Since day 1, I have washed my baby by hand….Even went out and spent about $1,700 on cleaning supplies.
hell, I spent well over $300 on micro fiber towels alone.

Sort of jumping to conclusions, are we?
Ever hear of touch-less car washes?
Or touch-less with pre-spray and then at the end micro fiber wipe down?
We don't all live in Arizona..........
Seriously? We don't all have $2K to throw away on cleaning supplies.

Here, car washes are a necessary evil.........unless you want to run all Winter long with your vehicle caked with salt and other very corrosive liquid chemicals they layer the highways with.

btw - You don't think your car has been through a car wash? Think again.
Bet it has been and maybe several times and you don't even realize it.

I wash my RAV4 at a "touchless" automatic car wash. The insert for the roof rack became loose during the first two washes. I just pushed it back in place. Since then, it has stayed in place after several washes. I just check immediately after leaving the car wash to make sure that it is firmly attached. No big deal in my opinion.

Yes, I have heard of touchless car washes. I even have one around the corner. First off, they never fully clean a car. Period. I almost always hand wash all of my car, however, hand washing will not get the winter brine off of ones chassis. I'd like to have my unibody frame for awaile. ;) Anyway, got strip replaced and dealer stated that this is a very common issue they are starting to see on Toyota SUV's.

This happened to me when I had 2008 yaris, the plastic thing on the roof would pop out. Since then I have learned to stay away from automatic car washes, especially here in Beirut were they rarely do maintenance to the washes. I took in my RAV4 to the dealer lately because the foglight sealant was letting in water, they changed the rubber forno cost, these things happen by default even if your vehicle is factory fresh.

Hi all,
This is my first post on this site , I am waiting for my white limited with tech package, my dealer is getting it from another dealer .

But onto the wash info...
I used to go to car washes , fist brush, then for years brushless .

Now the brush ones do scratch your paint over time and will destroy your clear coat, then paint over time.

The brushless ones do give your vehicle a nice sandblast effect over time and they do destroy your clear coat then paint and especially that fake chrome that car makers use, I had a 300m and wondered why my fake chrome was looking like shi* , and I figured it out, the sand blasting from brushless car washers .

Since then I only wash by hand, I find rainy days that are kind of warm to wash them in the winter or I live with the salt until I find one, but now I have a garage and wash them with no rinse soap (no rinse soap is a mixture of the soap and water, then dry immediately ) then use spray wax right after.

Now if the car has lots of salt, I wash off the salt with a very soft micro fiber mitt in another bucket of water before I continue , that way I do not scratch any paint.

As soon as I get some rain or warm weather, I take a hose to the underneath

This is what I have found, you do as you like, it's your vehicle and your money.

Best of luck.

You forgot a few layers...

carnauba wax
sealant
clear coat
paint
primer
metal

This is the stack up on a lot of people's vehicles -- especially those interested in detailing. Granted, they've only added the top 2 layers. I personaly don't use a wax but usually a good, long-lasting sealant.

Some people DO use a 3M clear bra or clear film to protect paint. I've never used one of these either...

Hi,
I am always interested in other methods as you say you use a sealant, can you please tell what brand and how long you have used it, and if you just apply that or do other stuff? How many times a year do you apply? ect..

Thank You

I just got my 2017 XLE in late December pre-owned certified from the dealer. I noticed the black rubber water seal/rain seal(?) came loose just inside by the driver side window and the back seat window behind the driver side. I was able to put it back into place and it hasn't come out in a couple weeks. I want to ask dealer about it. It has a Toyota certified used car warranty, but not sure if that includes door seals(?) Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
