So here is my question I have the rails on my 2016 RAV LE... I am wanting to add a roof rack to it. Do I need to buy the rails also to add the roof rack the ones that go across and if I do what ones are a good deal. I was looking at the Thule but didn't know what kind to get. This is my first vehicle with roof rack rails as all I've owned were pick up truck so I am sorry for the stupid question LOL
I just bought the OEMs on Ebay for $146 delivered, I have the Thule Crossroads with 58 inch load bars that were very noisy......the OEMs dont seem to be anywhere near as bad
Im only using them for a ski box, Thule Evolution 1600 so not too concerned about going over the weight limit.
Being using the thules on my last car, matrix and it was extremely noisy.....cant stand wind noise
I use Thule foot packs attached to the stock roof rack on my 2012. I removed the stock cross bars and replaced them with Thule cross bars. The Thule square cross bars are noisier than the stock Toyota cross bars but I felt the Toyota cross bars were too flimsy for my needs. I often carry one to two kayaks so I needed more strength. I also occasionally use a Thule cargo box and Thule roof-mounted bike carriers. I've used Thule products for 12 years and never had any type of failure. If a quiet ride is important to you Thule makes an "aero-bar" which would be less noisy on the road. A friend of mine likes Yakima but I've always felt Yakima products were inferior in quality. Have you been to the Thule USA website? It's pretty detailed and should suggest everything you'll need. Or if you have an REI near you, their employees and pretty helpful and should suggest what you need. They also carry both Thule and Yakima so you can easily compare price/quality. You can find cheaper roof rack systems online but why risk a failure at highway speeds?
I would get the Yakima Whispbars over the Toyota crossbars. The Whispbars are lower profile and really quiet. They also are more secure since they use lock cores to secure them to the roof rails. You need S45. They are pricey though.
Hi - I don't think I've seen particular details on the following regarding Toyota cross bars:
Can anyone describe their OEM roof rack set up for a 2017 Limited?
Did you buy aftermarket OEM (eBay, Amazon), or from the dealer?
Does the roof rack include locking cores -- what prevents someone from removing them from your car?
How much (approximately) did the core locks cost (assuming total of 4 cores, 1 per tower)?
How much did it cost to install, or did you do it yourself?
Would you recommend aftermarket cross bars, or getting them from the dealer? A Toyota dealer in the DC area quoted me $599, installed. That would mean labor is over $400 -- I'd expect them to install a rear differential for that price.
Thanks much!
