Curious as to what motors fit with a 96 4wd? and which is the best?

"Best" is relative. 3S-FE fits well. :-)

There's a thread on here about adapting a particular 5S-FE which would gain a little displacement. Also about turbocharger retrofits.

But if going whole-hog, we'd love to read about a V-8/FWD setup put in the back seat. :-)

The perfect engine to drop with is even lighter and a lot of power, a V6 1MZ-FE engine. I've got a lot of data if you are interested, of course, free. BTW, it will fit your trans-axle and engine mounts except the front one but its no brainier to make.
