All Wheel Drive ?

Hi All,
Just a quick question. How can I tell if my 2000 Rav 4 L is AWD or not? I can't crawl under it because I am disabled. Is it possible to tell by the VIN number? I do have a carfax and it says it is 4x4. Just curious?
Thanks in advance!

Hey mailman,

You are lucky, the RAV4 is standard fulltime all wheel drive, except the few which are specifically added as 2 wheel drive (2WD). That's also with added the option to lock the differential in situations where you temporarily need some extra grip on a single wheel. You might want to look into what the difference is between fulltime and on demand all wheel drive and how that difflock can come in very handy.
It was discussed recently with a very very clear video at this topic:

Thanks

Thanks Pim for the quick response! I was hoping it was AWD because that's what the Dealership sold it as being.

I saw the video, but My rav4 does not have a 4WD switch? It's a 2000 model.

It isn't 4 wheel drive on demand, it's FULL time (always) four wheel drive.
If it would be on demand you would have gotten a button to use it, but it would not be driving all 4 wheels continuesly (usually it's front wheel drive then untill you push in the button).

With RAV4 there is always 4 wheels which are being driven by the engine. Toyota however does give the option on other cars to have the on demand thingy.
A limited amount of RAV4 are 2 wheel drive. But that is specifically in the manual/ car information. Those do not have the 4 wheel drive option.

Also, I believe only the manual transmission has the differential lock button. Automatic transmissions lock the differential on their own when needed.
