Has anyone successfully procured a convertible top in the last two years? I am disappointed to find out its easier to find a Convertible top and performance cam for a Geo metro then a much newer RAV౺.
I have been told three different things. My local dealer there is no way to get them .. Then another dealer who list them on their internet website tells me they are all out of stock but if you really want its $8300 for windows and everything.. And then I call another dealer who list on the internet he tells me they have to order from Japan and they still can be procured.. I am still waiting for that exact quote.. I will call Village and hopefully someone their knows how to make it happen.
One more thing love the name.. I just rediscovered that song a year ago.. Fat boy slim mix.. its cool...
When you look at the product image, it will give you the part numbers for all the other roof pieces. VillageT lets you add the roof to the cart, but that doesn't mean they have one in stock.
You might have better luck searching Google with the stock code:
heres an update... tried to procure a Soft top. I have tried a few places including Boch Toyota South ,,, anyway no luck.. Called Marin toyota in California and they actually knew what to do... The soft top has to be special ordered from Japan and if you dont mind paying $500 ish for shipping,, that's for soft top and three windows.. Grand Total was almost 2K.. I found one place that listed a superceded p/n and said the soft top its self is available for $6000 I then googled that part number and found it as high as 8K.. Unfortunately its been too long and I threw that little piece of paper away.. i also never verified if they actually had it.. Im wondering if there was just a problem with YEN to Dollar conversion.. Ironically the windows were still available on same website for $200....
Since my clutch is on it way out and i have a broken strut i am nixing getting the whole top.. I will try to find a place who will hopefully remove the rear window without damaging the top I hope... My back window has holes and its worn bad.. very hard to see out of..Probably easier to see out of a 1973 Mustang rear window with a rear Spoiler...If my top gets jacked in the process i ll then order the other stuff after recovering from clutch repair...
I have heard so many terrifying stories about the soft-top, I don't open mine anymore for fear of destroying it. There were guys that made a hard-top but it looked like $h@%t........It seems like Toyota cannot stand behind their brand. Exploitation at its best!
I took my windows to a place in Bristol RI and had them replaced.
Cost about $150 and they're clear as day.
It was a place that repairs/replaces vert tops. The Toyota dealership in Bristol uses them sometimes.
The wife knows the name of the place, I'll post it up tomorrow.
Can you post some pics? you just had the clear window replaced but used the same frame? In Texas here i cant find people who will deal with the separated zipper.. Ideally I want factory look, No snaps or odd shapes... Now when I go to a place next time i will say you can tear up the window but you cant tear up the zipper unless the say they can replace it.. I just called a few places on the phone and they all gave me someone else's number who might do it.. I just want the top fully functional and to be able to see out the back glass.... I wish i had more time off so i can get some face time instead
My understanding is that the OEM windows are discontinued. So, if you can get them separately, go for it. When I checked last year, they retailed for US300 for the back window and under $200 each for the sides. When I tried to get just the back a few weeks ago, I was told by Toyota Parts Barn that they couldn't get it, even from Japan. I was able to get the seals for the top. I figure the rest of the hardware is patent on my baby. A local upholstery shop will replace my windows for around $450 which looks to be the only way to go at this time. Maybe if enough people start lobbying, one of the aftermarket top makers will come up with one.
Good idea and brings up the issue of material quality. Marine shops carry some pretty heavy duty materials which are great if you have to redo the entire top. Expensive, though you get what you pay for. I'm having mine done at an auto upholstery shop as I write this: replace the windows with a dark tint plastic, replace the velcro, and some minor re-stitching on the top itself. I'm hoping the zippers are still good, but they may get replaced, too. The hardware and plastic trim are still good. I'm also having a repair done to the driver's side front seat and the stuffing replaced. Cost for the top is estimated at US$450, total estimated cost US$550. I figure if they do it for 650 or less, it's a good deal. I'll post before and after pics when it's done if anyone's interested.
No, the windows have to come off. If the velcro needs replacing, or if there's any other issues, the top has to come off, too. There's a two-piece seal on the front that's subject to wear and may need to be replaced (I think it's #7 on the attached diagram - mine was ok). My zippers were ok, but they can be replaced. Here's some side window pics and a profile shot. Be sure to enlarge the pics if you want to see the detail. The improvement in looks and visibility made it well worth the expense.
The time's never right :wink but it's that or the aftermarket hard top you mentioned. I saw one awhile back. If we're talking about the same one, I thought it looked weird squared off at the back, but I liked that the rear window flipped up making it easier to get stuff in and out. Zippering the soft top to remove the back window is unpleasant!
Aussie 50, yeah, that's pretty much what my top looked like before restoration. BTW, why is your steering wheel on the wrong side? (ha-ha-ha, that one never gets old!!! ;-)
Just in case someone is interested in a new Soft Top
I bought mine in Germany @650,-Euro incl Taxes. Of course it's not Vinyl but similar to any modern soft top material like Volkswagen or others.
We have another source which is offering mostly Mercedes aftermarket replacement soft tops, and they ask 950,-Euro for it. But doesn't seem to be any different from what I have found. So...
You can check at www / verdeckshop / de
I'm sure they can figure out a way to ship to the US.
Mine will get installed in August, when I'm back at my vacation place where the car is located ;-)
I'm new here to the forum but have a '98 soft top so some experience with the top. I just sprung for a new hard-soft top from rallytops.com. They make them one by one in Los Angeles and they do a decent job. It's $795 plus tax plus shipping. I'm near San Diego so I drove up and avoided the shipping charge. They said if I'd pay cash they'd install it for free-- normally only about $50 but I liked it anyway. If you do decide to go Rally Top tell Jerry that Bob sent you-- you won't get any special deal and I won't get a kickback but he's a nice guy and I'd like to see him get some business.
For those of you staying with the soft top I have my rather beat up soft top along with most of the arms and clamps and all the rest of that available and am selling it cheap. The only real reason I'm even bothering is that the parts are hard to find so I want to pass them on.
As far as soft tops are concerned I replaced my own plastic window "glass" myself several years ago and was happy with how it turned out. Basically I bought the "glass" from a company that fixes convertibles. I probably could have got it cheaper but they had it and claimed it's what they use on Mercedes convertibles. So it cost me $50 if I remember correctly. When it came time to attach it to the old top I went out and got a small rivet gun from Harbor Freight for about $15 and riveted the windows in place. As I said it all worked out pretty well and I liked it-- sort of a blue-jeans look. I wrote an e-book at the time and tried to sell it on eBay as a way to cheaply replace convertible windows but didn't get much interest. If you respond I can probably dig it up and send it to you (for free).
Anybody know of a soft top being parted out? Or see one at a pick-a-part or junkyard?
I'm having my '98 soft top painted and the paint shop while removing the convertible top managed to break the black plastic trim piece attached to the top of the rear (tailgate) door. I am on a quest to find the part. When I found it listed in Toyota Dealer diagrams it was clearly marked as No Longer Manufactured. So I must find a '98 or '99 which has been wrecked. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
i have a soft top rav in pieces in Ontario, Canada.. shipping is expensive though. as others have said i dont know of any replacement trim for these yet. there's certainly demand. i have found a replacement top.
unknown quality but looks great. we want to hear about it if anyone gets one.
if you're on facebook with a soft top rav how about joining the club? https://www.facebook.com/groups/1487700151341818/ trying to keep us together to share info and partouts. i've heard rumours that there may be hope in the future. lots of these things still driving spread all over the world. how are we going to tell them all when the wait is over? i'm keeping my trim pieces to 3d scan if needed. they're broken but that can be fixed on the computer.
next rav is gonna be clean, next one is gonna live.
I have used 1998 rav4 convertible top, windows (yellow now) and top body parts for car.
If interested, will sell very reasonable. Just top and windows, no top metal hardware.

Hi, I know you said just the soft top & windows, but do you happen to have the brackets that secure the top to the car? I'm in desperate need of those!
