I purchased a rav last year without a key for the roof rack. The number on the lock is 29. Does anyone have one I could purchase, beg or steal? A copy would be cool. I have been checking lots of local Ravs, but no luck yet :(
Thanks

When I got my Rav , I didn't get a key for the roof racks , so I had a locksmith pick the lock (didn't take long) and make me two sets of keys .
It cost $39.00 .
It may seem like a lot but after not having any success at the two TOY dealers in town , I didn't mind the cost .
The whole process was done in an hour .

a year and a half or so ago, I tried to get a replacement key for my RAVs roof rack, and finally came up with one, thanks to the last incarnation of this site. Just before I finally got one, I picked the locks on the rack. It was so simple it was SCARY! I found information on how to pick the locks here: http://www.lysator.liu.se/mit-guide/mit-guide.html

Once you pick the locks (or have them picked), they are the same as those used on either the Yakima or Thule racks. I can't remember which off the top of my head. Many of my local sporting goods stores carry just the locks for the racks and you can get them in multi packs of 4 or 8 locks, so you can have your rack and any attachments be keyed alike. They cost about $10 per lock cylinder.

During my hunt for the proper key, I found out that many of the new Yakima and Thule racks come with a "blank key" that is used to insert the lock cylinders and I wondered if this could be used as a key blank also. I didn't really look into it since I finally got a key, on top of figuring out how to pick the locks. I honestly took about an hour to pick the first one, the other 3 were off in less then 10 minutes  total...

hi

Interesting!! That particular site is down, but several other sites offer what may be similar information. Anyways, if anyone has a #27 key available, I'd be very happy to buy one for my used '96's roof locks with no key.

Does anyone know if there is a correlation between the Toyota lock #'s and any other vendors? Thanks for the info. that the locks are similar to Yakima or Thule.

One thing that would be helpful is to find where we can get blanks to make extra keys.
So far I haven't found anyplace that I can get a blank so if someone needs a key I could make one for them. Mine is a #21.
cant get it :) - do you have a #21 key or do you need one?
i have #21...

hi

I need a #27, don't have any blanks or a single #27 yet. I'll let you know if I hear anything on blanks, I've heard they are the same as either Yakima or Thule, but have not verified.

am i understanding you - blanks that are the same keys just without a single dots/notches??? I think they MUST be in every key service... ill try to get a copy of mine #21... just in case i need it... jus for myself now... and i think there will be no probs with blanks...

yesterdey ive made a copy of the main key... works fine... though the specialist told me it wont work because of some imobiliser... so i think there is no built in imobiliser in RAV4 (1999) original main keys... huh...

Re: hi

I am talking about the Toyota roof rack cross bar locks. Don't know anything about the imobiliser. It's not in my 1996 model.

The key "blank" is the key that is not yet cut out for a specific code #. So you won't need key "blanks" until you have a master from somewhere. At that point, your locksmith will need to order (if he doesn't stock) the Toyota (or Yakima/Thule) blanks to cut duplicates.

Need a Roof Rack Key? Anyone have #23 #27 #29?

You need a key for your Toyota Roof Bar? Just tell these people what you want in an an explanatory email and offer to pay for the key plus shipping. You will definitely get a key(s), and you might not even have to pay if you are in Europe. It really is as easy as that! 8)
