1997 4wd C. Diff lock not unlocking

I have a 1997 4wd manual, the center diff lock has not been used in years. I engaged it while parked in neutral with engine running. Now when I hit the button it will not disengage and it beeps. I have read a few posts about this but havnt found many solutions. Is there a way to manually disengage/unlock the diff? I can hear the vacuum pressure release when pressing the button. Is there a mechanical part that sticks? I had to drive it about 15miles on the freeway with the split engaged. How much damage have I caused? It still drives smooth with no obvious damage. Please help!!

When my '97 beeps and does not disengage I put it in reverse and back it up 5 ft or so that always works for me. I think that is listed in the owners manual too.

My little rav had the issue encountered in the second link, when they put the clutch in they inadvertently decoupled the diff lock actuator from the diff lock pin without even knowing it, thankfully they persisted and found the pin disconnected before driving anywhere.

If it hasn't been used much the usual problem is the sensor sticks up. Way to find out if lock is in is to jack up front of car and rotate one wheel by hand if it rotate diff lock is disengaged and sensor switch is stuck which is a barsteward because it located in the transfer box right above the steering rack and is very inaccessible with the box in car. You can stop the beeping by removing the difflock switch from the dash but you do need to jack up and check its not locked in. If it is locked in it is possible with some brute force and persistence to manually unlock it by removing the o/s wheel locating the rod that runs into the transfer box and disengaging it. My opinion...... You wanna hope its the sensor that's faulty cos anything else is a pig of a job. Good luck and keep us posted :-)
