Loud clunk in rear end on acceleration after coasting!!!!!!

hi there. i have this loud clunk coming from my rear end.

Upon acceleration after coasting – very similar symptoms as back lash. A little history about the car – its done 160K kms, is a 1994 model, has the LSD option, was involved in a rear end accident.

Now – the accident occurred at 130K kms and there was never a knock in the rear end. Since the acco – the noise has gotten worse and worse to where it’s a loud clunk (very noticeable) (as if the car is getting wacked with a sledge hammer). the car was repaired by insurance at about 140K kms. The acco was a big hit to the tow ball causing the boot pan to be pushed up and rear end out of alignment. The car has done 160Kkms now and with ongoing dramas with the repairs – went back to the insurer where they remeasure the car and found both rear chassis rails were out of alignment from factory tolerances.

So anyway – I have this very loud clunk in the rear end – which has been located to the diff centre. The rubber mounts have been replaced unis and CV’s inspected as with the suspension and nothing has identified this noise.

My question is – has anyone here had the same problem? I have been told that the noise is in the LSD as this cannot be adjusted due to the tosen setup and this was a factory problem Toyota had when these cars were produced limiting the warrantees on the lsd option to 40Kkms only.

Another thing to note is that when I engage the diff lock, the noise is almost undetectable.

Can anybody shed some light on how the diff lock function works and how it affects the rear diff centre?

Any input highly appreciated!!

thanks

what do you mean? you can't 'bust' a diff mount. Its located by control arms.. There is not one mount...

You have motor mounts, maybe some sort of front diff/trans mount, the driveshaft center bearing mount, and 3 rear differential mounts, plus all the U joints, and rear suspension mounts/bushings.

It all needs to be inspected, along with any loose hardware.

On a lift its easy to inspect everything, even without a lift you can check it, i found bad lower shock bushings that were causing a rattle/knocking over bumps.

I think I had the same problem. The dealership told me the rear diff mounts were broken (22k to repair) but it was actually a lose bolt ($45 rto fix). It took about 30 mins to fix only because of the rust on the bolt. No more clunking noise.

I think I am developing the same sypmtoms, but I thing problem is the u-joints, beacause it(the clunk) occors when I slow down (brake) then get back on the throttle.
