What is this CLUNKING noise?
Ha, I just found this forum and this is my 3rd thread already...
Anyways I bought my 96 RAV4 about 3-4 years ago with about 110k on it. Its a 4 cyl. stick AWD 4 door. The day I looked at it and test drove it, it was making a clunking noise I assumed it was a U joint for sure. I was buying it from a ford dealer and they wanted rid of it before it went to the auction and I bought it for a decent price. Well here I am at 151k (41 thousand miles later) and its still making a CLUNKing noise from the rearend area. I have check and greased the UJ 3 times, and I also bought all new mounts for the rearend from the toyota dealer thinking this was the problem (this cost me a chunck of $ for nothing), also changed the gear oil (no metal shaves or anything to be found) and its still CLUNKING.. It doesnt bother me much any more, but I still wanna know what it is. I assume its in the Differential but not sure. It makes this noise whenever you first start to move either forward or back, or if you shift hard/sloppy while drive, or even if you let off the gas real fast and hit it again, it will go CLUNK..(gas it).. CLUNK... like that and you can feel it threw the car in your feet. So with the symptoms its obviously play/slop in something. I have adapted to learning how to drive it without hearing if for sometimes a week at a time, but its still there.. WHAT IS IT????
