Can I tow a small pop up camper with my Rav?

I'd like to get a pop up camper for my 2005 Rav4 4 cyl 2WD. What is the max weight I can tow, and what type of trailer hitch do I need installed?

1500lbs is very little. Don't forget to include everything that's in the camper (propane,food,clothes...). And the weight in your truck ( wife, kids, dog, stuff). And make sure auto tranny fluid is in good condition.

You can tow 1500 lbs. MAX which would be a Class I hitch but a Class II may be easier to find. You'll also need a light hookup for the trailer for brake lights/running lights and safety chains. If you have never backed up a trailer practice it BEFORE you need to fit the camper in a small space.

Class 1 (2000lb tow/200lb hitch weight) and class 3 (4000lb tow/400lb hitch weight) are available from my supplier. The bonus to the class 3 is that you can run a 2" receiver which means more options for accessories like bike racks etc. That being said, the class 3 does not mean you can tow class 3 capacity. In my region, I can get the hitch and wiring kit for about $200. So I think that is an upgrade we will do on our new (to us) RAV soon. Then we don't need the big truck every time we want to tow the utility trailer. I have wondered about very small travel trailers too, but we are pretty limited with such a low GVW.
