2001 4WD RAV4 - timing belt OR timing chain?

Hi,
this is my first posting and I just discovered this site, so I'm sorry if similar topics still exist.
I'm thinking of buying a 2001 RAV4 (4WD, 4 cil, 176xxx km) and today I have done a prepurchase inspection at a Toyota dealer. They told me (but the lady was not very convincing) the model has a timing chain and not a timing belt.
I did not expect this fact and since I'm not good in mechanics, I did not check for myself; I know the question may sound pretty stupid, but - does anybody know more on that?
For me it is an important matter, because the chain is more reliable than the rubber belt.
Does anybody have a link or a pdf document with the brochure for the 2001 RAV4? (chirileo@gmail.com)
Thank you.

Welcome to the forums!

The AZ-family of toyota engines all used a timing chain. so yes, your rav does have a chain and not a belt.

heres some more info if youd like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_AZ_engine

Hi Drifter, thanks for your answer; now I'm more confident and it's one more proof that RAV4 can be a well done job.

While yes, the 1ZZ has a timing chain, its in a different family from the AZ engine. as its name says, its in the ZZ family of engines: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_ZZ_engine

Added note: The 2ZZ-GE (the upgraded and supercharged brother of the 1ZZ) is what powers the Lotus Elise SC and Exige.

the 1zz is the motor they use in the corolla., so im sure it's going to be reliable. How's the power from your 1.8l?

'02 Rav4 LTD AWD (Onyx black, f. flares, moonroof, alloys) SOLD (Aug '02-Aug '10)
'97 Accord EX-R V6 (heather mist metallic, roof, beige leather, alloys, pwr seat) SOLD (March '09-Dec '10)
Current: '04 Acura 3.5RL Premium (Nighthawk Black Metallic, black leather) (October '10-present)
Advice: Life's too short to spend $35K on a NEW Rav4. Buy used a Acura/Lexus, ENJOY life AND save money. Trust me, you won't regret it.

2001 4WD - timing belt or chain

Absolutely fabulous ! I can outrun most cars on the road which aren`t performance vehicles. I`m not kidding. *wink*

It would be better if it had 4WD i/o just front wheel drive as it doesn`t take road bends or corners as well as my old rav 4.1.

Fuel consumption-wise : at half tank, it`s already equals my 4.1`s full tank distance.

Question : the corollas use the 1ZZ engine but it doesn`t have a timing chain right ? only the rav4 does ?
