Default Front pads and disks any gotchas ?

Hi all ,, first post so hopefully in the right place

Thought id pop in here and ask if theres any gotchas i should be aware of when fitting front disks and pads to a 2004 rav ?

Im helping out a neighbour whose just been widowed suddenly as. Her brakes are on the metal and she doesnt have a lot of money so i offered to help

I own a landy so have tools and some experience etc

Hopefully theres nothing out the ordinary on a rav with a disk and pad change but thought it wise to ask first as some vehicles these days have odd dos and donts ,, ie shogun di-d you dont squeeze the brakepistons back in without releasing the bleed or the back pressure of fluid can fault the abs system.

Looking forward to hearing if its straightforward or not as im probably doing it for her tomorrow

Any help or tips much appreciated

nick

You will want to search out what grease to use and where to put it.

You are already ahead of many with your plans for the brake fluid bleeder and the can of brake fluid.

There is a thread here in the 4.2 forums with the factory service manual available for down load. But the only posts on here with problems changing brake pads all involve corrosion. When badly corroded this job will turn into a nightmare.

Nothing out of the ordinary, these brakes are pretty easy to replace.

I think the disk is held on by the lug nuts+bolts and probably rust.

The 4.3 disks have one or two M8 x 1.25 threaded holes that can be used to help force off the disk by inserting a screw to push out the disk. I don't know if the 4.2s have the same, but I would suspect they might.

This looks like a really good method, and it does not involve getting screws into thread that may be rusted. It shows a Ford, but the technique should be generally applicable to RAV4s too.

I got mine off with heavy hammer ok the vibration sprang mine off el rapido, they are only press on and centered on the wheel nuts
Warning Warning Warning (As per the lost in space Robot) wall dont use the pad retaining bolts on those press off threads on the discs first thing happens is you strip them errg then you try to fix the thread in the caliper slide and wreck that too use spare bolts as per carbons u tube vid but only if you have too mine fell off easy after the above drama of course with a surprising little hammer persuasion good luck
