check engine [P0420, P0430 codes]

I was just driving today my 2002 Rav from work and check engine control light came out and it's on. But car drives ok, at least looks like.
Any ideas where to look first?

Any suggestion about good car tester to see the error code?

thats what I found on msn:

An occasional problem on this vehicle is the failure of the Engine Control Module (ECM) software. Toyota has revised the software so the Check Engine Light will not illuminate falsely and set trouble codes related to the Catalyst System. Factory warranty covers this software update for 8 years or 80,000 miles.

Check with local auto parts stores. Some of them have handheld testing units that can read the engine codes, and some places will check them for you at no cost. Once you know the code number(s) you can look up the corresponding description on this site.

With out checking the code you would only be guessing... BUT HERE GOES

I'd say it may be an O2 sensor playing up... common problem... (But it is a guess!)

Go and get the computer codes read and see what it is...

Keep on RAVin.....

just visited AutoZone and they really scanned this for free.
got P0420, P0430 codes, so I guess nothing serious?
place a sticker over it to cover the light and keeping raving...

Actually I might visit toyota service since they should fix that for free.
I have only 35k miles.

I checked gas millage with the check engine and without, looks exactly the same 24.5 m/g.
BTW after I reset the check engine light, it came back after about 270 miles.

thanks for doc, I'm a little afraid though that they can screw gas mileage with that fix.
BTW, if let say cat or sensors really went bad, do they exchange them for free too?

I took mine in for this and the same codes checked at both Autozone and Schucks, told them the problem and the first time the replaced the cat converter and reprogrammed. About 2 weeks later the damn check engine light comes on and I go back to AZ and Schucks for the same code - grrr The toy dealer says oxygen sensor and it's not covered under warranty which is BS since it's part of the emission control , cost me a couple hundred for the dang sensor and I instlled it. Do a search and you'll find my post a while back.

Get it fixed, since I fixed it I haven't had any engine lights for 12K but it sure pissed me off since we just got the car and every week the dang light came on for some reason...

Best of luck,

Brian
