There were 2 things that stopped me from buying 2012 Forester fe and the interior space before I learned about friend of mine tranny/gasket troubles.

Yes for at least a couple of years already. First concrete result is the new Scion FR-S / (Toyota FT86 in other markets) and Subaru BRZ sport coupe which has a Subaru flat four engine! They are twins, non-identical twins but still twins

Very interesting, didn't know that. I've been very impressed with some of the Scion cars and have noticed they are getting a lot of modding attention. They have also been rated as one of the most reliable cars out there.

Funny things happen sometimes. When I had my 2008 Impreza and learned a couple of years later that Toyota bought about 20% of Subaru, I figured the fit and finish and soundproofing would improve thanks to Toyota's reputation. I was quite disappointed when I took delivery of my 2012 RAV as I felt I was back to square one...

However, the new Impreza and upcoming Forester appear to have improved in both departments; the same seems to apply to the new RAV, Camry, Avalon and perhaps a couple more models. The same can be said with Honda (2013.5/2014 Civic and new Accord). It seems like the major Japanese auto makers cut corners with cheap materials, poor fit & finish, little or no soundproofing then finally came to their senses listening to car owners and journalists (and seeing how the Koreans have made so much progress and are now praised by owners and journalists!). Makes me wonder "What were they thinking"? Like I said in another thread, I worked 28 years for a very large company (Honeywell) and the stupid things they would do to save a few ¢ resulting in sales seriously dropping and they were quick to blame the salesmen like me for it! There is hope for my next vehicle, be it a Subaru or Toyota but it ain't gonna happen for a while as I do very little mileage now and want to keep my RAV for 6-7 years unless I fall in love with a new model (it happened many times before)!

Just an FYI... Toyota has a ~15% stake in Fuji Heavy Industries (the parent company of Subaru).

They don't technically have a stake in Subaru...
