It most likely would deter criminals from targeting permitted gun holders and their businesses and residences.

Wow! Look how many gun owners/licenses there are yet, it doesn't seem to have been any deterrent to these shootings like the firefighters recently...

It does inform criminals that care to look who does NOT have a permit.........
Yes it is public information but done with no thought at all or reasoning. I thought they were to report news not make it happen.

It seems to me that such info would not increase the risk of crime to people who do not have permits since permits generally are not required for longer-barrel weapons, and with millions of these in the hands of the public no one apart from those owners (and those they may have told), no one knows who has a weapon or weapons and who does not. And then there are those people who either have weapons illegally or are not required to have permits since some jurisdictions only require them for carrying a concealed weapon.
