Hi guys,

it's been a while someone posted something in this thread. Yesterday I bought an 1997 RAV4 and I would like to change my headlights to these:
LP-TORA98CBR-DP Dlab Headlights - Euro Chrome Style, W/ Projector, W/ Halo (-Us) Pair for 96-00 Toyota Rav_4 at Andy's Auto Sport

Unfortunatley most of the images and links which were posting here are dead now.

That's why I am not quit sure what I need to do and buy to make the mod happen. What I get is that I need to buy this harness and install/replace it:

9006 And 9005 9006XS 9005XS Headlight Heavy Duty Wire Harness Relay by AutoDirectSave Bulbs HID

Is this correct? You are also mentioning a wiring diagram. Where can I find it? Is there maybe a step by step instruction available? Any pictures of a succesfull installation which I could take as a reference?

Thanks in advance!

First let me say that the US models of the 97y are switching the ground...not the power for the control of hi/lo and on/off. As the switch is turned on it grounds the headlight relay (constant power) for headlight control therby turning on the headlights. At the same time, the combination switch (dimmer) is controlling the ground for either the hi or lo side of the bulb.
Looking at other 98+y US models the lo side does go off when on hi from the factory with 9005/9006 bulbs. As does the factory 97y with 9003 bulbs.

Now...On to the conversion...
Factory 1997
Right Headlight
Red/Blue = Power @12V 15A
Red/Yellow = Hi Ground / Earth
Red/Green = Lo Ground / Earth
Left Headlight
Red/Black = Power @12V 15A
Red/Yellow = Hi Ground / Earth
Red/Green = Lo Ground / Earth
On the upgrade headlights there will be a common color coded wire on each bulb. (I don't know what color, I am using GM parts for my upgrade). This common color may be Red/?? That wire(s) from both bulbs goes to either Red/Blue for the Right side or to Red Black for the left side. Then the remaining wire(s) on the lo bulb(s) on both headlights goes to Red/Green. Therefore the remaining wire(s) on the hi side bulb(s) on both headlights goes to Red/Yellow.

Therby giving you a factory setup of hi - on = lo - off...

If you desire to have both hi and lo on at the same time...
You will need...only one relay (30A), one inline fuse (30A), two inline fuses (15A), wire 14Ga of some length, wire 16Ga of some length, and a bunch of crimp connectors or solder connectors of various designs.
Ha Ha Ha ---------NOT!!!

Actually all you have to do is move the wire that is connected from the lo bulb to the Red/Green (lo ground) wire on your factory harness to a solid Ground / Earth. Because the circut is grounded throught the combination switch normally, that bulb will now have a constant ground when the combination switch is moved to hi ground. And already being grounded is the headlight relay providing power to both through individual 15A circuts to each lamp assembly. Powering now both of the bulb(s)...As far as the amp pull throught the latter of the two circuts...As long as you use 60w/51w bulbs you will only be pulling less than 10A through a 16Ga/15A circut. Last time I did my math...A 16Ga wire would sustain a 15A load indefinatly and burn only above a 19A load. There's a 24% margin for error there!

Using either of these two methods relays, wiring harnesses ect are not necessary.

If anyone would like me to send them a wiring diagram send me a message.
Thanks for the detailed information, I'd really appreciate I you could message me a wiring

Is it not just possible to buy the wiring adaptors for a facelift from Toyota and plug it all in that way? Like it is for the rear lights.

Thanks for the idea, I'm sure they'd probably sell me a full wiring harness for top dollar if that's what it comes to.

From what I've see photo-wise, there is a plug in the engine bay, which you have the headlight harness plug into, which isn't that long, so wouldn't be too expensive!

Just had a thought, if it's not possible to get direct plug and play wiring from Toyota, and if you didn't want to go through the hassle of wiring it up yourself, then what about fitting the facelift headlights, but keep the H4 bulb from pre-facelift for hi/lo in the outer headlamp reflector and putting the sidelight in the inner reflector? As I've heard the reflectors and lenses on facelifts are that much better, so this is making partial use of that at least. Saves having to find somewhere else to put the sidelight/fit a facelift front bumper and indicators. Opinions anyone?
