At last I got mine Myron & Davis OEM-style DVD/GPS installed today.

All features seem to be working as advertized and over all I am please with the unit. However, there is one issue that I am dealing with it right now. Backlight for all function keys do not get illuminate when I turn the head lights on. They do briefly come on when I 1st start the unit, but goes off few seconds later and stay off even if I turn on my head lights.

I asked the installer and he replied the unit install should be plug_and_play and he is not sure why it is not working and why he needs to make changes to harness to make it work. Does anyone have any idea how to trouble shot and fix this? I called Myron&Davis tech support, they told me that I might need to jump or by pass some wires from the harness to troubleshoot this. :wall

Does anyone had that issue and/or know the fix, if so, please share it. Thanks in advance.

Do a search on this website on head units.. there are some threads on the wireing harness and what the different wires go to. Junbug may be able to help, I think he posted some somewhere. Once you figure that out, it should not be too hard to get the right wires hooked up.. You have a 2007 Limited so I would think the wireing harness should match. You could send the wireing diagram to M&D and ask them why it doesn't work.

I am going to call to M&D tech support to see if they can provide me the wiring harness diagram. My installer is not too keen nor willing to help me out and have warned me if something goes wrong to unit while he is troubleshooting the issue he will not be liable for it. I wonder what kind of professional installer he is!?!?

If he told you he could install it, he is responsible for installing it, or he should give you your money back. He should be familiar with this sort of thing, it happens all the time.

I called M&D support again and they said have the installer call them which he reluctantly did, don't know for sure though, but that is what he said.

I am taking the car back this evening, let see if he can fix the issue without frying the unit. :?

No need to get power from headlight. It is a small load of current. Just tap one of the wires either on the LOCK button or the HAZARD button.

Your intaller has to remove those two side trims anyway to access the radio. I just tapped into those wires last week. It's a 10 minute job.

If he cannot do even that, then he is not qualified to call himself an installer!

If you want to tap some other wires, give him the RAV4 electrical diagrams, let him do the reading BEFORE you head to his place.
Hopefully he knows how to read electrical diagrams!

You can access the electrical diagrams here

It's just an illumination wire we're talking about, right? (typically orange or orange/white)

Did this unit's harness not have one? Seems odd...

After speaking with M&D tech support, who appeared to be confused themselves with the issue, the installer removed/rewired the brown wire from the head unit harness to AXXESS adapter.

According to the installer if this brown wire was for illumination then, it should have been orange or orange & white as 03rav4inpa mentioned.

Nevertheless, now key illumination backlight is controlled by turning on the head lights. Overall I am VERY happy with the unit and all its features are working as expected!

I just installed one of these in my wife's 2012. The lights work on mine but the aux plug is different so had to do some wireing. I can't get my factory usb to work any ideas on how to wire the factory usb to the myron and davis usb harness or an adapter to connect it? Also cant get my camera to work

The Amazon price was always over the top. It was there 2 years ago even before the Chinese units flooded Ebay. Good to know that they have US support; this is always a huge plus. Is it made in USA?

However I think it has "older" technology but offers features which many units do not have e.g XM/Sirius tuner..
Were you able to find the CPU and Memory used by this unit?
Does it support Voice dialing i.e make call without having to fiddle with the screen?
Can you confirm that it uses the SW control without the need for addional kits or harnesses.

Overall I am glad you are happy with your unit.

Is it made in USA? NO, the unit is made in China but branded and sold by M&D from the CA, USA
Were you able to find the CPU and Memory used by this unit? - Do not know, I will check, I was told it is running on Win CE 5.0
Does it support Voice dialing i.e make call without having to fiddle with the screen? - NO
Can you confirm that it uses the SW control without the need for addional kits or harnesses. No need for ASWC steering wheel control adapter.

Overall I am glad you are happy with your unit. Yes, mainly because it sounds better then stock radio, super fast GPS in re-calculating routes, text-to-speech, lane assist & junction view and latest maps from Tele Atlas (Gogo Swift)

I like the looks of the GPS too. Do the button text and knobs have the stock orange glow at night? I've noticed some of these OEM HU's do and some don't. Those that do really blend in well with the car design.

Easy to use and looks of 3D Maps, TTS and Lane assistance are excellent and it is very responsive. It hasn't been crashing or freezing like my stock in-dash HU for Elantra does.
Yes, the buttons and knobs glow orange at night and matches 100% and blinds in with the rest.

Can you hook an IPhone into the HU. I use my IPhone for music but not via the BT audio because I lose some of the options. Is there an IPhone hook in.
I was able to connect iphone5 using A2DP option and had no issue streaming iPhone via bluetooth. The HU is iPod and Sirius/XM ready with IPS01 cable which I did not buy, so I don't know if it is good or not.

Gents, this (Myron and Davis) looks like the one I am landing on. Was wondering a few things. Have a '12 Rav4 Base. Hope you guys can answer some of my questions, rather easily.

1) Does this unit require a Sirius tuner and cable (IPS01) to get satellite radio, or just the cable?;

2) It sounds like the steering wheel controls will work on 2012 without much fuss. Is this true?;

3) Will I still be able to use the USB Port and Aux port in the center console near the armrest?;

4) Will I still be able to use the bluetooth microphone (which I believe is near the rear view mirror)?;

5) What type of navigation software is used? Is it good? How do I upgrade? Are there many ways to "upgrade?"

6) I have what looks like a navigation GPS antenna on the back of my car. Is that indeed a Navi antenna, and if so, will it work.

7) Will any backup camera due, or is there one that is fail proof and RAV4world.com recommended

8) I am not handy at all, can I trust BestBuy to do the work, or should I go a specialist car stereo shop. And, how much should I pay for the job?

Finally, apologies for the noob questions. Thanks, for bearing with me.

1) You need a tuner and the cable.
2)On '12's you will need to modify the 28 pin plug for the steering wheel controls and aux. Not too tough.
3)Aux yes USB no. Someone makes an adapter for about 12.99 to connect the aftermarket usb to the factory usb. I'm working on a straight splice(free).
4)No you must use theirs.
5)Don't know but it's ok. It can be updated on their site with a newer version for free but I believe you can go to any site(TomTom, Garmin, ect.) and dowload(pay) to the navi card I think.
6)That is an amplified audio antenna with a provision for factory nav reciever, myron and davis antenna wont fit, I tried!
7) DON'T buy theirs use the one from Rav4world. I didnt but its got to be better than Myron and Davis's!
8)You can do it just take your time. Any compitant installer can do it in about an hour. Talk to them if they sound hesitant walk away. It's not hard at all just looks like a whole bunch take your time stay organized and work with one cable at a time. Wouldn't pay more than 100.00
And you need an antenna adapter no biggie like 15.00

From their website:

1. seems like to you need a tuner too
2. SW controls will work
5. read previous post by Disk2050. I believe that you could upgrade the software since it is on microSD card. However, since it is using WIN CE 5, I am not sure if it will handle Igo Primo 2.0 well
8. I am not too handy either but you learn as you go

Please confirm than 2012 RAV is compatible with this unit as the ports are slightly different from 2011 - might need a cheap adapter for the antenna.

#39 ·
thanks for the tips so far, can you also confirm that you can play music while in Navi?

Also, you mentioned the 28 pin connector needs to be modified, so this HU comes with the 20 pin connector, correct?

Thanks

I'm looking to replace the stock radio on my new Rav 4 and this seems to fit the bill.

#40 ·
Gents,

I need help. I had the AX-TOYUSB installed. No dice on getting factory USB to work with the radio. The factory AUX works. It would be great to be able to play music through my iPhone hooked up to the USB, but I'd settle for it just charging my phone.

Also, can't seem to get Sirius to even pick up the free station. I bought the Myron and Davis cable and the Sirius SCC1 universal adapter.

Finally, the 2012 Base Rav4 was not really plug and play with the radio for the SW controls. The installer recommended an adaptor, and then the installer tried to splice without adaptor and it didn't work.

Any advice here would be most welcomed!

Thanks.

I noticed on the link provided in the first post that their page now says "click here for the new 2012 map update for your nav unit" has anyone done this yet? What was the cost if any? I am considering getting this unit but I have a pioneer avic in a different car that I really like. I was hoping this Myron & Davis unit was sporting WINCE 6 but from what I have read it looks like WINCE 5. Thanks to everyone for all of the info.

I just installed the Myron & Davis NV7TRV1 without connecting HU brake wire to anything... it blocks all DVD viewing parked or moving. So, when I decide to connect the HU brake wire,... Does Anyone with this unit know how to by-pass the GPS/DVD on Myron & Davis HU?

#52 ·
ukfan, I noticed in your sig that you have an avic f700. I also have one of those in a different car. Recently got a rav4 and currently looking for a nav unit for it. I am thinking either the myron & davis unit or maybe a newer avic. I would be very interested in your experience or advice with comparing the units (pros and cons or stuff like that) Thanks

#78 ·
Okay, my experience with the Myron & Davis HU has me wishing that I had kept the Pioneer Avic F700BT. The Pioneer HU ran Garmin GPS software, which is far better than the Gogo Swift that the M&D uses. My M&D HU's NAV quite working after a few days and I will be sending back the map SD card for an exchange. Also, music skips on random songs while playing from SD card(class 10). DVD/CD/FM sounds pretty good. Video clarity is very good for DVD and Backup Camera.

To be fair, the techs at Myron & Davis have been very helpful and a pleasure to deal with.

So, the Myron & Davis NV7TRV1 is not a terrible HU choice. Just not a good choice for my needs ( I need accurate GPS for my daily work).:)
