my 2003 rav4 has a 2.0 engine and it's knocking & i know it needs to change; I came upon a vendor who offered me a 2.4 engine saying it's compatible ( or i's the same engine) he said all I have to do is transfer all of the stuff that is attached from my old engine to the replacement & I can use the same wire harness and ECU. For anyone who knows is this just a straight swap or does it need some mods . The engine is imported as low mileage from japan.........
NNNooooooo, this is a major job. the 2.4 s ECU will have to be used, harness, electric throttle pedal, gear shift mech, is he just selling you a motor or are you getting a front cut? Will the gearbox bolt up?
There are major differences in ignition systems and ECUs
Had you thought about an upgrade to a 3t-gse Caldina or gt4 Celica motor. This would be easier and give you more HP in the end.
Beams motor?
Might just be better to go with a straight replacement, or rebuild the old one.

So if the 1azfe to 2azfe is bigger ...I am curious don't you need a different transmission to install the 3sgte, ECU, etc. I just don't see how this would be easier...I hope that it is....just trying to understand the process. I have a 2002 rav4 (2nd gen) and every 3sgte swap I see is a manual first gen....is the GT4 celica an automatic? will it work with a 4wd? thanks for the info.
The project is finished.
I am really happy I did it, the car runs smoother and the engine picks up way faster and has more power.
Because I changed from the D4 engine I changed the following, the engine, the complete loom, the computer, the maf sensor, the oxygen sensor, and the temperature clock.
Not sure if you change from a 2 liter vvti to ta 2.4 vvti if you need to changed these items too.
This the resonse I got from the engine vendor. Im located in california I know these 2003 rav 4's come with 2.0 engine & in 2004 they started having them with the 2.4 wich is also in Scions' camry's and highlander; iv'e been comparing parts from the 2.0 and 2.4 and there the same the externals and timing chain cover etc. So if anyone has done this please let me know.
In simple language I would like to tell you that long block (means head & bloc) of both 2.4 LTR 2AZ FE & 2.0 LTR 1AZ FE is exactly same. All you have to do is transfer all external parts / accessories from your 1AZ FE 2.0 ltr engine i.e Intake, exhaust manifold, alternator, p/s pump., AC compresor, pulleys, timing cover, oil pan etc.
That is all you need to know. If you don't trust us there is nothing I can do. 2.4 ltr engine comes out of many different vehicles like Toyota Highlander etc but long block is same. ALSO ALL EXTERNAL PARTS THAT YOU WILL TRANSFER WILL FIT PERFECTLY as bolt holes are same.
From experience I can tell you it needs more than just an engine as you can read in my post that was linked to above.
I actually sold the car at the end of last year because it was continiously given problems which was more related to a bad job by the electrician than to the engine itself.
I switched from a d4 to a 2.4 vvti so I am not sure what the difference would be from switching from a 2.0 vvti to a 2.4 vvti
External engine parts will bolt on straight but I am sure that the ecu and some of the wiring loom is different and airflow sensors are different too.
what im understanding you went from a diseal engine to a gasoline of course the computer & wiring would be different the vendor has sold these engines for the rav 4 without any problems & I was assure the onboard Ecu or computer is very compatible wire harness from my old engine......... Any one any more thoughts .
We in the u.s dont have diseal engines for these types of cars..

You are asking for advise when you seem to know the answer already and don't want to listen what other people advise you.
Even though people telling you that it is not a straight swap you tell them it is.
Why bother to make a post like this if you are sure you know the answer already, maybe it is your post count you are doing it for.
I am pretty sure that an ecu for a 2liter engine is different than for a 2.4liter engine, maybe you should call you local dealer and ask them to compare some part numbers of some items (like ecu, airflow sensor, oxygen sensor etc etc), guarantee you that they are different, especially that the engine is for JDM and I am guessing that your car is from the USDM.
The externals like altenator, starter etc ect will bolt straight on though
If you believe it is a straight swap I would say go ahead and do it, you will notice the difference in power of the engine right away, the 2.4 liter engine is a decent size engine for the rav4 as I alway believe that the 2 liter is underpowered for the weight of the rav4.
Mine was driving great with the new engine and had a lot more power but was giving problems due to a electricain who did a very messy job wiring up the engine.
NO offense on the post; im trying to gather info that's all and I was not familiar with the D4 Engine I was just doing research on that D4 & comparing: but I do appreciate the info. Any pictures on your old rav 4 engine etc.'
IMHO - i think there is no much problem to swap 1az-fe to 2az-fe, but need rav4 2.4 ecu, maybe another parts such as bush or other. But in main - i can t see any big problem. Or search for rear - crashed rav4 witn 2.4 engine and make-a-swap
I change 1 chevy engine before but that was a straight v6 Not a front wheel drive engine
im sure i can do it ; im very mechanically incline just have to take my time. The pople from engine world usa told me that the ECU & engine harness and all external components are 100% compatible; I asked the guy if they sold 2.4 engines for 2003 rav 4 s he said yes a lot and so far no complaints.. Have you done this swap........

Finally how is your RAV4 2003 performing with the 2.4 Liters engine..I am about to install a 2004 scion TC engine (2.4Liter) in liitle RAV4 2001 that the engine was destroyed when in a car accident( hit the lower part of the engine against to a big rock...oil pan and timing cover are broken and also other stuff inside the engine)
I really appreciate if you or anyone else can give a feedback agout swapping engine for 2.4Liters..thanks
we put a 2AZ-FE 2.4 into a 2002 rav4 last year. The motor was brand new in a box and all we did was change the front plate because the engine mount was different. This motor was made for Camry. Motor cost was $3650, clutch $180. took my son and i a full day to do the swap.
fuel economy is not that good but we don't have anything to compare as when we bought the car the engine was blown.
Uses 12-13l/100km around town and down to 9l/100km on the open road. Resent trip with roof rack and loaded was 13l/100km. Would like to change ECU but the cost would possibly be more than the savings.
Hey guys I am new to this site and I need help I have a 2005 rav 4 that has the 2.4 and recently it blew up I then purchased a 2001 rav 4 engine witch is a 2.0 I don't care if the engine is gonna give me less power my concern is more about running right and is the swap gonna need modifications please get back to me asap I am trying to change engine this weekend thanks
Hi guys I’m new to this site and I was having the same problem with a 02 Rav4 that has a 2.0 engine and after I read all your comments I decided to do the 2.4 so I can share my results and here I’m and just to let you all know YES you can do the upgrade to a 2.4 or the downgrade of 2.0 and trust me y’all be happy with the results
I also did the 1AZ to 2AZ swap.... very easy swap. I kept all the external parts, sensors, wiring and ECU from the 1AZ. If I remember correctly; the ECT (engine coolant temperature sensor) was different... and the knock sensor. If the engine come off a different vehicle than a RAV4; you'll need to swap the valve-cover to bolt the air filtrer box, and the timing chain cover because the motor mount that bolts to it is at a different angle.
