starting problem

We bought a new 2012 6 cylinder Rav4 in December. It has run fine, except on 3 occasions it would not start. It has a push button start which usually works (when there's a fob nearby), but occasionally will not work, even if we do the usual routine (foot on the brake). All that happens is that some lights go on, but no starter crank or other sign of life. After walking away from it and returning 10 minutes later, it works fine again.

Our dealer and the service department are stumped. And of course it works when they try to start it.

Anyone have any ideas what causes this?

Have you tried changing out the battery in the fob?

I also wonder if the shift interlock for the transmission is recognizing the car is in park. Have you tried moving the shifter some when the engine won't start?

Is a cell phone near the key fob as you try to start, like in the same pocket or a purse? We had this issue with our 07 Infiniti, if a cell phone was near the fob, it wouldn't allow the car to start (electrical interference- Infiniti later replaced the key fobs). Just a thought.

I also have a 12 V6 with the intelligent key and have had it refuse me entry into the vehicle with the pulling of the door handle. I have had to push the black button to unlock the door, but no starting issues...yet. Hope this doesn't end up being a routine thing!
