2008-2012 transmissions

Hi,
I'e been thinking about buying a 2008-2012 Rav4 6 cyl. 5AT 2WD. I've noticed people complaining about "whining transmissions" and accompanying expensive repair bills. Are there any years I should avoid buying?
Thanks,
M.

Does not matter. Any of those years could develop the issue down the road.

Mine had the whine from day one and trans was replaced long ago, now it's beginning to whine again. Her's has never whined and likely never will. There's just no way to know other than the test drive. No whine? Hope for the same in the future.

Garage
My 2008 transmission started whining around 15,000 miles. It was replaced under warranty at around 19,000 miles. I have since driven it almost 17,000 miles and the whining has not returned.

usually you hear it from the beginning, and it doesn't really get any worst with time... (some exceptions of course) my first rav4 didn't have it, and my second had it from day one, still wondering if I should have it fixed or not...last time toyota "fixed" my transmission I ended up with a brand new Rav.

Surely the dealers near you have had time to practise
I would take it to have it replaced.

2006-2012 V6 transmissions have the same issue. Somehow Toyota did not think it was wise to install the re-engineered transmission even after it became a known issue in some RAV4s.

30k miles since the reman transmission was put in. So far so good. Whining transmission is not a reliability issue, it's more of an annoying issue. If you can get a good deal on it, I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as the power train warranty still valid.
