I have a 2008 RAV4 CV6 just passing 160,000 km and wanted to know how long these are good for, and when I should be considering a replacement.
It has been serviced by Toyota workshops since new. Will appreciate any
advice.
That's a good question, Richard. At a little less than 100,000 miles, I'd say your RAV4 is good for another 50-60K at least. My rule of thumb is when it starts getting too expensive to maintain, it's time to get rid of it. What repairs has it needed so far?
When I had my RAV in for service at the dealer I spoke with an owner who said that he has 240,000 on his V6 RAV and it doesn't use any oil between changes and still has the original brakes. He also said that he has had no problems at all and has only brought it in for normal services.
he also said it never had any problems and didnt use any oil between oil changes......sorry that is just too much....i just dont see any vehicle going 240k without anything going wrong....sorry....
It happens.
I drove the crap out of my '94 pickup with the 22re.
230k and the total result was one clutch and one warped exhaust manifold (routinely hopped onto the freeway and hammered down on a cold motor)
I did not take care of it... Jiffy Lube oil changes with Castrol 20w50 every 10k if that engine was lucky, often I'd get the oil changed when I saw the oil pressure gauge swing down on turns (and have not done that since).
Here's a testimonial from the 4.1 forum - 330,000 km = 205,052 miles :
"My brother & I both own 97 Ravs bought new. Each has over 330,000 k We drive in harsh winter conditions here in the Yukon. Sometimes at -50C. His is a manual & mine an automatic. We have never had transmition problems or any other for that matter. All I have ever done is change the timing belt after each 100,00K & replace the other belts at that convient time. So just watch your fluids & go."
and also from the 4.1 forum: "It's not a 4.1, but I gotta brag about the 240,000 miles plus on my sweet old 2001 Black RAV4. Ever since buying it new I've been putting synthetic oil in it. The guy at Toyota said if I did, I'd not notice anything til 70,000 miles, after which it'd keep running great. 14 years later and MANY miles later it's running great. I drive 100% of the year for my job, all over the US and am pleased as punch about how reliable this old girl is. I do have new car fever and am looking forward to the day I can buy a Blizzard Pearl RAV4, CASH! Gotta pay off my house first! "
A little topic drift: in 1971 my hippie brother called me from Berkeley California. "My bro, you are a greaser so I'm asking ya how to take care of my brand new Toyota." He bought the cheapest model - no radio, no heater, vinyl covered cardboard interior door sides, no nothing.
So I told him exactly what tools he needed, what to do, how to do the maintenance and sent him the How To book.
He took to maintenance like a religious fanatic.
Fast forward to 2001 when he pulled his typical revved-up leap from a stoplight to come to sudden stop with a heart breaking mechanical Thump. He and his wife got out, looked under the car and saw something sticking through the oil pan. "That's a connecting rod, stupid" she said.
He blew up in a rage screaming, "I'll never buy a Toyota again!" He had over 240,000 miles on it.
It took him years to get over it, then got a new Toyota.
I just crossed 226,000kms on my 2009 V6 limited 4x4 and had to put in a good chunk of change (water pump, serpentine belt, front struts, brake pads/rotors at all 4 corners, new set of all seasons). In the past it's had the brakes done once, rear diff coupler, a single coil, and a battery + usual fluid changes. Can't complain really as the diff coupler was covered by Toyota Canada even though I had 196,000kms on it.
Our '08 AWDV6 RAV4 has a bit over 160k miles. The water pump was replaced about 20k miles back. One front CV boot shows a bit of seepage. It's the most fun vehicle I've owned since my old Mustang LX-Sport, and a lot more versatile!
