GoPro Hero as dash-cam?

I'm thinking of purchasing a GoPro Hero (which I believe is the "old style," and which GoPro no longer produces) to use as a dash-cam, and I'm wondering if anyone here on the RAV4World forums has experience with using this camera as a dash-cam?

My mom has a Transcend Drive Pro 100 which has been a great dash-cam (that I've borrowed), so my fall-back option is to get a second one of those, but it would be nice to have better quality footage and also the flexibility of the camera being more than just a dedicated interior dash-cam. This GoPro Hero is priced new at about $130 (and the Transcend is about $100), whereas unfortunately other GoPro cameras are substantially more expensive and out of my price range.

My main questions are if the GoPro can be relatively easily charged from the vehicle, and if it has a loop-recording feature and will over-write older files once the memory card becomes full, but general info from experiences with using this camera in a RAV4 would also be helpful.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

A Go Pro makes an 'ok' dashcam. The only problem is that it doesn't loop (I don't think there's firmware for that and I have a Hero2 and Hero3 Black) and editing videos can take a long time. Get a dedicated dashcam if you travel/commute a lot. I have a Street Guardian as a front cam and an older FineVue Pro HD as a rear in my Rav4. My wife's car has a G1W-C in front, my van has an A-118C and I use a spare G1W-H for rentals and the occasional work fleet trucks. Dashcamtalk.com has all the info you need for dash cams. You can see what I use on my YT channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCna...XayMDMw/videos

About 3 years ago a dashcam saved my insurance rates on a minor collision so I'm a strong believer in them.

When you can get a dedicated dashcam for less than $62, why bother?

Great, thanks for the info!

The decision of which dash cam is best cost me a bit of time when I picked out the Transcend cam for my mom, and I'm happy with it as a dedicated dash cam, so I'm thinking if I decide to just get a dedicated dash-cam then for the sake of time I'll get the "known quantity" of another Transcend cam (though I'm sure there are lots of others which are as good or better in the same price range).

One of my interests with the GoPro is that I could use it outside the vehicle on a scenic dirt road (e.g. the Eureka Dunes Road in Death Valley) and put together a "trip report" movie. However, it looks like having long movie files certainly could be a problem with the GoPro. Splitting files after a set period of time of recording appears to work on the newer/more expensive GoPro's along with looping, but GoPro no longer seems to have info on their site for the older camera that I'm looking at, the "GoPro Hero Action". With the older/cheaper GoPro I could probably live without the looping feature since my commute is relatively short, but I do remember now having trouble transferring files from the Transcend dash-cam via a card reader when they were 2 minute long videos, and it worked much better when I changed the settings to 1 minute videos. I've emailed GoPro with a few questions, so hopefully they'll have some good answers.

Thanks again to everyone for all the advice!
