Oil Change Beware - Rav4 takes special oil - from Toyota

I am really fired up now. Just got back from the Toyota dealer (Savage Toyota, Hamburgh, PA) after getting an oil change. I had a coupon for $19.95. The total for the oil alone was $22.15 @ $4.43 per quart. I was told that the 06 Rav takes a special oil which turned out to be 5W20. Evidently this change took affect in February.
They told me that the Rav is the only one that requires this oil. After showing how I felt about this unexpected rip-off, My bill was adjusted with a $22.52 credit.

So, all you fellow Rav 4 owners, don't be surprised when you get the bill for your next oil change. If I would not have complained, my total bill would have been $43.98 for an oil change.

4.43 per quart? You can get synthetic oil for that price.

Oh we didn't tell you we are going to put 5W-20 in and charge you extra??

The car will run just fine with the 5W-30 they buy in bulk.

I've never done a single oil change from a dealer for any car. Never had a problem. That "special" oil is a joke. I've always used full synthetic after the car hits 3000 miles (3rd oil change)

Cars, snowboarding, house modding.

Make sure they don't do a similar tactic on you.

Oh..the free oil change was based on our normal oil (5W-30) you need "Special oil" so you will have to pay $xxx a quart for your car.

And don't let them try to tell you it will void your warranty if you use 5W-30

Both 5W's are made from the same 5 weight stock. the 30 blend just has more Viscosity Index additives that allow it to flow like a 30 weight oil at 212 degrees F. They both flow the same at zero degrees (the 5W spec)

I know that. My point is why is Toyota telling Rav owners they need oil that costs $4.54 a quart. Since I am retired, I cannot afford synthetic oil, so I wait until I get a coupon for an oil change for $19.95. At that price, it does not pay for me to change it myself.

Toyota says you cannot use 5W30 in a Rav. If you have engine problems in the future, they will tell you you are using the wrong weight oil as per the new TSB.
