Replacement Keys

Hi,

I lost one of my keys for my Rav4 and am trying to get a replacement. I went to the dealer and he wanted to charge me $500! How can I get a new key and reprogram it for less than $200. Also if I found a blank key how would I program the transponder?

Thx

This is the programming sequence for Lexus -- likely to be simliar for the Rav4 but I'm certain if it isn't, someone will have it for you ASAP. The replacement key should NOT cost you $500! But it will not be cheap ...

DRIVERS DOOR OPEN AND KEY REMOVED FROM IGNITION SWITCH .
INSERT KEY INTO IGNITION SWITCH , THEN REMOVE IT .

WITHIN 40 SECONDS -

PRESS LOCK AND UNLOCK ON THE VEHICLE DOOR LOCK SWITCH AT 1 SECOND INTERVALS 5 TIMES .
CLOSE AND REOPEN DRIVERS DOOR .

WITHIN 40 SECONDS -

PRESS LOCK AND UNLOCK ON THE VEHICLE DOOR LOCK SWITCH AT 1 SECOND INTERVALS 5 TIMES .
INSERT KEY INTO IGNITION SWITCH .
SWITCH INGNITION "ON" AND "OFF" ONCE TO PROGRAM A NEW KEY CODE WHILST RETAINING THE ORIGINAL CODES OR TWICE TO PROGRAM A NEW KEY CODE WHILST ERASING THE ORIGINAL CODES .
REMOVE KEY FROM IGNITION .

*SYSTEM SHOULD NOW LOCK AND UNLOCK VEHICLE , ONCE OR TWICE DEPENDING WHICH MODE HAS BEEN SELECTED*

WITHIN 40 SECONDS -

SIMULTANEOUSLY PRESS AND HOLD KEY "LOCK" AND "UNLOCK" BUTTONS FOR A MAXIMUM OF 1.5 SECONDS .
WITHIN 3 SECONDS : PRESS ANY KEY BUTTON FOR A MINIMUM OF 1 SECOND .

NOTE --- IF SYSTEM LOCKS AND UNLOCKS TWICE VEHICLE TWICE , PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE HAS NOT BEEN COMPLETED .

NOTE --- A MAXIMUM OF 4 KEYS CAN BE PROGRAMMED .

NOTE --- TO EXIT THE PROGRAMMING MODE : CLOSE DRIVERS DOOR OR INSERT IGNITION KEY .

I knew these keys would be a ripoff if they got lost or damaged.

It would be cheaper to get a standard ignition key cut and put in an aftermarket keyless alarm system with a separate fob. Unless you've got the immobilizer of course, in which case they've gotcha.

I have not lost or damaged an ignition key or remote in 30 years so I'm not going to get too concerned.

You have the limited, thats why it cost so much to replace it. Find a blank on ebay, get it cut from a specialize lock smith. Sometimes the blanks will come with instruction for programing, if not, then the above instruction should work as well.

Good Luck

If you can live without the remotes, a dealer will sell you just a regular key very cheaply.

He has a limited, so the key wont be cheap, it has a immobilizer chip in it.

I asked my salesman yesterday and he thought a replacement key/fob would run under a hundred bucks. You might want to call another dealer or Toyota directly.
