Gasoline and the RAV4

What grade unleaded gas do you put in your RAV? I've always put the lowest grade in my cars, but someone is telling me to use the highest grade. Someone else is telling me to only get my gas at Chevon since there is an extra additive in their gas. My wallet is telling me to get the cheapest, lowest grade unleaded gasoline I can find! Opinions?

Yeah - this board has been through this discussion before. Some say you better stick with "Top-Tier" rated fuel - Chevron, Shell, QT, and others that supposedly have higher detergent levels. I may be penny wise, but have been using inexpensive Costco or Sams Club gas in all my vehicles for years without issue.

I use shell because I have the shell mastercard with 5% discount. Even the name brand gas is as cheap as the "discount" stations nowadays- so 5% off shell works out to about 15 cents less than anywhere for me.

Once in a while, I fill up with Chevron to get the Techroline cleaners (best in business)

Also, I noticed a MPG loss when using premium. My V6 is tuned for 87 octane and it seems to prefer that grade.

If you want to keep MPG high, try using 100% gasoline and not the 10% methanol gasolines. Methanol gives more horsepower, but reduces economy

What about the gasolines that contain the 10% ethanol?

The place I usually get my gasoline now has signs by all the pumps stating that the gasoline contains 10% ethanol. The RAV4 manual says it's okay to use gas with ethanol, but I'd rather hear from those who know best---YOU!!

No methanol is not used as much any more, unless you're into race cars. It'll eat up your fuel system. Big difference between methanol and ethanol.

30% ethanol should give you same or better mileage and be as good as premium when it comes to anti-knock (ping) qualities and be cheaper, but you'd have to mix it yourself at the pump (1/3 E85 and 2/3 unleaded). 10% ethanol will probably hurt your mileage a few %.

Your wallet is right, just use the regular grade if there is no problem. You can either use top tier gas or use the no name brand and just pour a bottle of Techron in your gas with every oil change.
