Programming a keyless fob on a 2009 Rav4

I purchased a remote key fob for my wife's Rav4 on Ebay recently .
When i went to the dealer they wanted $159.00 to cut the key and program the remote. It was also a 3 hour wait.

Instead of being robbed and waiting 3 hours I decided to do some research and found some information that pertained to the Toyota Pruis.

I posted the link below.
Has anyone on the forum been able to program a key on their own?
Thanks,
Tony

You cannot do OBP (on board programming) on a RAV4. The instructions you referred to for the Prius look like just the remote, not the ignition system.

You can try a locksmith who does automotive work and see what they will charge.

Here's how you program the remote keyless entry. NOTE: This does NOT program the immobilizer chip--THAT has to be done by the dealer. You can have the key cut anywhere, program the remote entry yourself, but the immobilizer must be programmed using the dealer's equipment:

Start with the key out of the ignition. Open the driver door (all other doors are

closed). Driver door is unlocked (other doors don’t matter).

Perform these steps within 5 seconds
Insert the key into the ignition (don’t turn it) Pull key out
Insert the key into the ignition (don’t turn it) Pull key out

Perform these steps within 40 seconds
Close, then open the drivers door.
Close, then open the drivers door.
Insert the key into the ignition (don’t turn it) and pull it out.

Perform these steps within 40 seconds
Close, then open the drivers door.
Close, then open the drivers door.
Insert the key into the ignition and leave in the ignition.
Close the drivers door
Turn the ignition to ON (as far as you can go without cranking the engine), then back

to off .
Remove the key from the ignition.

Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock then unlock automatically

indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do

not cycle at this point.

Perform these steps within 40 seconds
Press the lock and unlock buttons on the transmitter simultaneously for 1.5 seconds
Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, press the lock button by

itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should lock then

unlock once indicating successful programming. If the door locks cycle twice, repeat

steps 6a and 6b as the remote was not accepted.

Open drivers door.

Locksmiths can program the immobilizer, you are not restricted to only going to the dealer.

Great info, this should be stickied.

I think it is in the TSB section.

not all locksmiths can do the programing. the equipment is pricey, so they need to be in place that can pay for it. In my area, fugetaboutit.

Mike

Mike:

You're right, the equipment is pricey. But more and more locksmiths are getting it.

I work for a locksmith supply distributor, and we sell this equipment. Unfortunately, we don't have any working samples where I could use it.

Hopefully, in your area, you will someday have some locksmiths who are set up for this.

Where are you located?

Are these steps for real or are you just trying to get my neighbors to think I'm weirder than they already think I am?

You should have seen me and my brother-in-law programming one on his Sienna--it's even more involved. He gave up and said that the dealer must use video gamers to do this stuff. I finally got it after a few tries.
