2006 RAV4 Spare Key

Hello. I recently purchased a used 2006 rav4 and needed a spare key for it. I was wondering if i were to buy a spare key like this off ebay, how much do you think toyota would charge to cut and program it for me? also, do you think it would be cheaper to just buy the entire deal from them? please advise, and thanks!

US version 2006 had no immobilizer it it so any cheap key should work.

I'm done with this forum and not coming back.
The overzealous moderators overstepping their powers did it for me. Sorry, never liked Nazis of any kind.

Hello. Thanks for replying. So you are saying I can go to Toyota and get a regular key cut and it would be cheap?
Also, if I wanted to purcahase another key with an alarm, would you reccomend purchasing the alarm off ebay and letting toyota cut it or get the entire key from toyta?
Thanks again!

No need to go to the Toyota dealer unless you like wasting your money. Yes, that Ebay key will work just fine--get the key cut at Home Depot or Lowe's and you can program the remote to open the doors yourself.

But you have the Limited which came standard with the immobilizer. Hers is the Base model which did not.

Sorry to jump in here but if this is a genuine 2006 model pinkdreams has (same shape as junebugs picture) and even though its a base model why would it not have an immobiliser?

My RAV is an April 2006 base model imported to the UK from Australia and mine has an immobiliser. Would the US models have been built elsewhere, as in the US and the spec doesn't include an immobiliser? I'm sure all models of that age coming out of Japan (as mine was) will be fitted.

Pinkdreams - quick question - does your key have remote operation and a dot stamped into the metal shaft just under the plastic fob??

Denis, due to a Canadian government mandate, all 2006-2011 RAV4's have the immobilizer fitted. I can only assume that Australia has the same regulation. Here in the US, only the Limited had the immobilizer in 2006. In 2008, it became an option on the Sport and Base editions. And finally in 2009, it became standard on all RAV4's sold in the US.

Perhaps they thought that you don't get as many cars nicked in the US as elsewhere in the world.

So Toyota took advantage of this mandate for the US and didn't fit them because they didn't have to (and still charged the same for the vehicle - excuse my British scepticism), or that they were told not to fit them by the authorities??

Anyway the keys on Ebay look right for the RAV and even without an immobiliser will probably be OK for pinkdreams car.

Why the skepticism? When a big corporation can save a dollar or 2 on each vehicle by leaving something out that's not mandatory, they will do it. Did you know that Canadian RAV4's have heating elements in the windshield (excuse me, windscreen) that keep the wipers from freezing to the glass? Many areas of the US have just as much snow and ice but the heated windshield is not mandatory, thus not available here. OTOH, US-spec RAV4's have TPMS, which is not fitted on Canada-spec RAV's. Likewise, your Australian RAV4 likely has a knee level airbag, which is not available here. Because it would add hundreds of dollars to the cost of the vehicle. It's all about the money.
