Make a copy of Valet key

I'm thinking of making a copy of my Valet key at a ACE Hardware store. Will it start my car and drive it for a short distance? Anyone has any experience on this?

Does it work or do I have to go to the dealership to make a copy?

I had a couple keys made for my 2009 at Wally World the other day and they only opens the doors. The key for the ignition has a chip in it and must come from the dealer. I got two in the deal when I purchased mine. One for me and one for the honey.......

If Ace makes a copy of your valet key, I would think you would be able to start your car and drive you for a long distance. That key would have a transponder chip and would cost $80 or so. Maybe your local Ace does not have that ability. Google

I have not tried the service, but I did see a sign at an Ace Hardware.

If you were to have a no-chip key made, I would not expect the engine to start.

Does the Valet key has a chip in it? Anyone copied a Valet key before?

The Valet key has a chip in it for all of the newer ones -- the ones with an immobilizer transceiver chip in the non-valet keys. I can't answer your other question.

I am sorry, I do not know/understand what a valet key is. Other than possibly being a key for the valet parking people to park your vehicle. Here in my part of God's world, I had never used valet parking until they started this at Kings Daughters hospital in Ashland,Ky. I thought there was only two types of keys, one with a chip to start the vehicle and the cheap keys for the doors in case you lock yourself out.

The "valet key" is known as a "sub key" in the RAV4 owners manual.

The valet key is intended to unlock the exterior doors, and start the vehicle. It will not allow access into the glove box of a RAV4, or into the trunk of vehicles with trunks.

If your main key has an immobilizer chip, then your valet key will also have an immobilizer chip. The valet key does not have any buttons for locking/unlocking the doors or operating the panic alarm.

It's also sometimes called the "service" key, as in the key you leave with the dealership to use when repairing your vehicle.

I don't remember getting a valet key for my Rav4. I only got 2 regular keys.

Cars, snowboarding, house modding.

We got three keys, two regular keys with remotes, plus a grey one with no remote and a different cut so it only opens the doors and not the glovebox.

Every one of our cars has a valet key and they hang in a downstairs closet so any of the four of us can snag any car if needed.
