I'd say that what you eventually does depends on how much longer you intend on keeping your Rav. If it's for the long term, I think it's not a good choice to just stick heavier oil in it (which would work) but to try to find out and fix the cause. Other than something like running the engine without oil, or driving it really hard after an oil change is due, it's hard to imagine the cause is wear. Instead it sounds like something on the more minor side isn't working correctly.

Read up on this new TSB for the 2AZ-FE oil consumption problem. Covered by the 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty:

Just found the oil consumption TSB over in the Service Bulletin area. Apparently there is a defect in some of these cars that causes high oil consumption, and Toyota will fix it under the 60K powertrain warranty but only if the car uses more than 1 qt. oil per 1200 miles (!).

So off to the dealer, wish me luck. Not sure what I'll do if they won't fix it, the repair involces best I can tell removing the engine and replacing the pistons and rings, would be pretty expensive if T won't pay.

If they won't pay or at least help then it's buy oil by the case or get rid of the car. It will take time for them to do the test and validate (or not) the consumption.

The way I see it, You might have hard time to pass smog check in near future if there are too much oil in cylinders.
