We bought the Platinum extended warranty from Troy Dietch of Greenfield Toyota when our 2006 RAV4 was new. I don't remember the exact cost ($810 for 7 years/100K zero deductible) but it has saved us substantial money. The warranty will end in just a few weeks when we hit 100K, but it's covered 5 coil packs, with the first failing at over 70K (outside the regular warranty), and a few other things. We may even have saved money if we'd paid the $1500 the dealer asked for!
Note: this is true with other manufacturers. When I bought my 2008 Subaru, they tried hard to sell me a factory warranty, and wouldn't give me much discount. When that warranty was about to expire, I went back to them and said that I was interested, but not and their price and made an offer of what I thought was reasonable - they counter offered with only a small adjustment and I accepted, saving about 40% compared to what they wanted when I bought the vehicle.

Wow all these stories sound familiar. We just bought our first new car (RAV yay!) and the dealer pushed the extended warranty so hard I thought he might refuse to sell the car when we said no to $2800 for 7yr/100k. He was getting frothy at the mouth and kept making tiny reduction in price. Final offer from the dealer $1800 for 8yr/100k. . We held firm and I'm glad we did. This has been a very helpful forum. I've been perusing it for more than a year while I did my car research. This great resource is one of the things that helped me decide which vehicle I wanted.

I am so glad i found this forum!.Thank you so much for Jerrys info to!..I just bought a 2011 Toyota Camry not a Rave....I got the warrenty for 2,400...After reading all this i am in the process of cancelling it and will be getting one from Jerry before my 36,000 miles..
Buying this car was a VERY unpleasant experiance and i will never go to dealer again without a preapproved loan form a credit union..Lesson learned..One good thing is i got the internet price on the car which was several thousand cheaper than dealer price at the lot!..Thank you everyone for all the info! |

I recently moved down to North Carolina from Iowa. Despite buying cars in many different states, I was in for a rude awakening down here. The dealers here are all part of huge automotive groups and are by far the most dishonest car dealers I have ever dealt with. A couple of weeks of ago I decided to get a new 2012 Rav4 before they were all gone. I negotiated a fair price based without all the BS the dealers try and force you to "have" to buy down here (e.g. $200 for nitrogen in tires, $400 lifetime warranty on "hand-painted" stripe"). This was the easy part because you can research what a fair purchase price is before going into the dealer using sites like KBB, Truecar, and Edmunds. The hard part is when you go into deal with the finance manager. Of course I was offered an extended warranty for $1715 for a 6 year/60k "platinum" warranty with a $100 deductible. I said no thank you. He said well if I could shave off an additional .5% off of your interest rate and extend your payments, would you take it? I still said no thank you. He continued on and on and on until I asked if he could do it for less? He stated "Toyota does not negotiate on their official warranties, but for just a little more I could get a 6 year/80k warranty for $1800". I then asked him directly "So you are 110% sure this is a Toyota warranty and not some 3rd party warranty and this is the best price I can get?" He said yes. Stupidly I accepted. Fast forward two weeks after this. I received a call from my finance company (Chase) to verify the loan, the payment due date, and to see if I had any questions. One of the first questions they asked was if I purchased any additional accessories, maintenance plans, or extended warranties in the loan? I told them I purchased an extended warranty. They asked if I could verify the amount of the warranty. When I retrieved my paperwork, I noticed the extended warranty agreement did not say the word "Toyota" on it anywhere. I then Googled the name on the contract and low and behold, it was a 3rd party warranty. I went straight to the dealer and told them I wanted to cancel the warranty. They asked why and I told them about how I told this was a official Toyota warranty when I bought it. This finance manager then told me it wasn't, but was an official warranty used by this 63 store automotive group. To wrap things I up, I searched online on where I could buy a true Toyota warranty and came across this thread. I contacted Jerry Johnson via the email I quoted above. He contacted me back, explained everything to me, and I was able to get a much better official Toyota warranty for around 1/3 of the original price I paid for a 3rd party warranty. My advice? Research warranty prices just like researching car prices before going in, and don't be afraid to say no to the dealer if they play their games. Thank you very much Jerry and thank you for the moderators who made this a great thread and for saving me a lot of money! |
