I live in NY a took a trip over the weekend down to Pennsylvania with my 2011 RAV4 I4 4WD. I have the optional 3rd row seating as I am married with 3 kids and we brought the dog as well. The trip was around 120 miles one way and going down I got 29.4 MPG there and back home got 30.3. I really can't complain as it is only rated for 27 MPG highway. The temperature wasn't any warmer than the low 50's as well.
I only went around 60 MPH as there was nothing faster than posted 55 MPH anyway. The only other longer trip we took was earlier in the year in April to Cornell University (live 45 minutes south of Buffalo) and I got 30 MPG as well. I have put 17K on this this SUV since March and have not had any issues yet so I am very happy with it. |

If you can hold it down to 60 mph you'll get excellent mileage. But 70 is much more common as on I-84 thru NY on my way to PA with the limit posted 65 most of the way. Many other parts of the country running 80 mph is the norm. That's a mileage killer.
I haven't checked mileage on our RAV4 but with my Accord Hybrid the sum of speed and mpg stays close to 105, so at 60 I'd get 45 mpg. I never drive 80. Getting horrendous mileage and possibly a ticket isn't worth the few minutes earlier I might get somewhere.

Very good info, thanks for sharing! I'm a PA native and get close to the same mileage whenever I visit friends/family in Long Island. I'm a 4.2 but still good nonetheless.
It's good to hear that the 4.3 crowd is getting near-30mpg too!

Well, just took our RAV on its first cross-country road trip over the weekend - Denver to Durango and back. 29.9, 28.7, and 32.0 mpg while cruising anywhere from 55 to 69 mph - either at or 4 mph over the posted speed limit, except for that burst to 120 near the Great Sand Dunes - and that was the tank that got 32 mpg. This is better mileage than my '06 RAV.

I always calculate manually. Besides, my Base RAV doesn't have a computer.

Really? I thought all 2009+ RAV had the "Display" button on the steering wheel.

Well lookey there! Color me red! Why, how nice. Thank you for that correction. I DO have a computer. Now I will start comparing it with manual calculations.
