Need new "smart key"

Hi,
My daughter just purchased a 2009, v6, 4wd limited Rav4. Seems great so far.
only ONE key fob came with it. I want to get her another. It is the same "smart key" as our prius has, with the push button starting.
Is a dealer the only/correct way to go, even though expensive.
Thanx,
Carl

You can buy one with the same FCCID of eBay and take it to Toyota to get cut and program, you'll save $150 bucks this route.

You can also get the smart key programmed using the techstream software and vci cable and avoid going to the dealer, just make sure the smart key is brand new never used otherwise you won't be able to program it.

This is what's confusing me. This fob has no "key" portion. it's the kind you can keep in your pocket and just push the start button, like my Prius.
Thanx,
Carl

Yes, Carl, there is a key portion. Push the small button and slide the mechanical key out from the fob. It's all in the owner's manual.

How easy is it to program using the tech stream software and cable? DIY anyone?

While you are learning about the key fob, you may want to read up on how to start the vehicle when the fob battery dies. I was lucky that my fob battery died while my car was in my garage. I’m just glad it was not in LA stop and got freeway traffic. I would have been really hurting.

Starting goes SOMETHING LIKE this: Once in the car, take the fob and place it against the button with the logo touching the button. Put your foot on the brake and the button lights green. You now have approx. 30 seconds to start the car.

It all written in the owners manual.

Enjoy.

Here are a few short video clips that describe using some of the features of the Smart Key system. I found them to be quite informative.

Unlocking the door with a Smart Key that has a dead battery:

These are great, I appreciate you posting it.I have a question about reprogramming for "all doors unlocked". Do you have to repeat the reprogramming with both keys or is the change being recorded in the car itself?

Thanks
