Default HID Question

Hey guys whats up, let me just start by saying this suite has been very informative. I was amazed at the wealth of knowledge I found here. Keep up the good work. If any of you ever visit Jamaica, don't be afraid to look me up Cool

I have a 2008 RAV4 I4 and I'm planning to replace my stock head lights with a HID Conversion Kit from http://hongkonghid.com/, as well as install some OEM Fog Lights that I plan to get off ebay or the local dealer Toyota Jamaica and convert those as well.

According to http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProd...placementGuide Lamp Replacement Guide:

The High Beam Headlamp are 9006, Low Beam Headlamp are 9005 and the Fog/Driving Light are H11's

Does this mean i have to by 2 separate bulbs for both high and low beam, or will ballast operate in both high regardless of which set of bulbs are installed?

Looking forward to your replies bye for now

(If there is a post that answers this question already just post the link and I'll check it out)

Yes, seperate bulb for high and low, so if you want to get HID's for both you'll need to buy two kits.

One ballast controls one bulb. To power the headlight and high beams, you'll need 4 ballasts with 4 bulbs. If you also want to throw in the "fog lights", then you'll need 6.

Just to let you know, HID kits in the fog light is a VERY bad idea since the point of fog lights is to illuminate the floor not flare so much that it bounces back from the fog vapors.

Also do you really drive a long time with high beams? The bulb takes time to warm up so unless you plan to have them on for more than 30 seconds on a consistent basis, I wouldn't recommend it.

HID's for brights, not worth it.
Even in the lows too. I tried a set from my 09 Corolla and the glare was too elevated. At least in the Corolla, it was low enough and manageable.
You'll be pissing people off. Hopefully not the police.

Thanks for the reply guys..............

@ Zeoth I figured out that I would need Ballasts x 3 and Bulbs x 6, my concern was if I had to buy 9006 bulbs x 2 and 9005 bulbs x 2, then put one of each in one ballast. Because I asked a friend of mine the other day and he said no, just buy a high and low kit, and i was like huh? That's why I came to the experts here at Rav4 World.

Good point about the fog lights, but there just for show, where I live is hot ass hell and I have a better chance of seen the second coming of Jesus Christ, b4 I see any sign of fog

A friend of mine said that if I have both High and Low HID's in, I'll never turn on the High beam because the Low Beam will be bright enough. He recommended halogens for the low's and hid's for the high's, but I still want to put them both never the less.

@ CircuitJerk what do you mean by the glare was too elevated? Care to elaborate a bit more. Out here HID's aren't illegal but the cops will pull you over if you have an outrageous color like Red, Yellow, Purple or Green. But the White (4300K) or the Light Blue (6000K) will be just fine. I'm getting the 6000k

Interesting. I've never seen one ballast power 2 bulbs. Take pics when you get them. It would be interesting to see how hot that ballast is going to run.

You can do a bi-xenon retrofit if you wanted one bulb for both hi/low beams.

Not sure if you can on the Rav4. I think the low beams cut out if you flick on the high beams... I think.

Maybe. You said you needed ballasts x 3 and bulbs x6. That means one ballast every 2 bulbs?
