rim size for 2010 rav4

I bought a new basic 2010 rav4, the factory rims are 16 inch steel, can I install 17 inches alloy rims?
if yes, except for the bolt pattern(5*114)? what are the value for other specification? such as offset? backspacing?
By the way, any recommendations on the brand name?
Thanks in advance!
James

The Rav uses a high offset rim, so anywhere from 35 to 45 mm would be a good fit as long as you are near stock widths.

Oh, by the way, I purchased a set of winter tires from TireRack just a little bit ago. Alloys turned out to be only $20 per wheel more than steelies, and I would have had to have purchased some plastic hubcaps so the cost different was really small. I ended up with Sport Edition rims, which look good and have worked fine, with no vibration or balance issues up to extra-legal speeds despite that there was quite a bit of balancing weights used (not sure if that was due to the rim or the tire). I'm probably looking at purchasing another set of these rims for a Honda Civic I just purchased for my daughter. In the 17" size, they're less than $90 each, and TireRack includes a package that has the wheel nuts, hub-centering rings, and the ring retainers. I'm going to go with them again whenever I need wheels because the cost and ease can't be beat.

RAV4s have a lot less brake caliper clearance than a lot of other vehicles (and there are a whole mess of them out there) that take a 5 x 114.3 bolt pattern. Stick with a bigger retailer (Tire Rack, Discount Tire, even Belle Tire) and they'll have done the homework to know what will and won't fit.
