Default Spare tire and carrier for SAP Sport model

I made an inside tire carrier for a temp spare, the tire cover is from a Jeep grand cherokee, because of this SAP model using RunFlat tires it did not have a spare. when I bought it the run flats had ben replaced with std tires and no spare. soooo I equiped it with this set up.

I'm interested in how you mounted the spare tire on the inside of the tail gate. Are you using the metal subwoofer block-out blank under the trim panel as the secure point? I wasn't sure if it's structurally sound enough to support ~50 lbs weight of the spare wheel hanging off of that plate though . . .

Very ingenious and out-of-the-box thinking

I was looking into this expensive alternative solution but seems vastly overkill for the odd long road trips.

You should add "SAP" (sport appearance package) to the thread title so that others will know what it's about. Most SPORT Rav4's have spare tires, only the SAP Rav4's have no spare

the mount was pretty easy to make, I toke a saturn vue compact spare, sat it in on top of a 2x4 and marked the holes in the panel [line up 2 vertical and mark] remove panel, check location for speakes and such if ok , drill panel, make bracket and mount to door, I used bolts the same pitch and thread as the lug nuts, put a nut and body washer to give the panel support on both sides. this way the panel is not bending and causing the tire to loosen up when driving. tighten tire with lug nuts, . so the same wrench will remove the tire. wella!!! std tires with spare. nothing to steal and sell back to you on gregs list. hope this helps someone out.
the jeep cover is a bit tight but the pocket works out very nice
the vue spare is the right size in diameter and the holes line up !

So you mount the bracket directly to the plastic door panel and not the metal?

Great! So it still takes up a lot of interior space. Yer between a rock and a hard place.

I'm assuming OP inserted the bolt+washer through the rear door interior sheet metal/subwoofer blanking plate from inside the cavity, through the trim panel hole, and locked the bolt in place with another washer+bolt combo to form a wheel stud. I would think three/four studs should do the trick hanging the spare wheel on the inside.

For a long road trip with two persons, very doable after flipping down the backseats for your luggage and gears. It sure beats $690+taxes+shipping for the swing out spare wheel carrier contraption I linked above

Yeah, it would seriously eats into the cargo compartment space with the backseats in the upright position.

no it is a compact spare!!!! it takes 6 inches, I removed the panel, atached a braket to the door, installed the panel , installed nuts and washers on bothe sides of the plastic panel so as not to stress the panel .
sorry to cause you to jump to unwanted conclusion

I was daydreaming on this . . .

You can anchor a racing wheel hub face (not the hub back-end), the kind with a single knock-off spanner hub-nut, to the interior surface of the rear door as the spare tire carrier . . . All you have to do is put the spare wheel on the hub-centric center post, spin on the giant single hub-nut and you're off to the race . . . .
