Hi, I was wondering if anyone has replaced the Stock Stereo (JBL A51880) that came with your 2010 Toyota Rav4 Limited (or any other car) and what did you change it to?
I am looking to replace mine with something better and was wondering about a few things:
1. Radio- FM and XM Satellite Reception any better? Mine sucks!
2. Bluetooth- Can people actually hear you now and you don't seem muffled or appear to be screaming at them? (This is a know issue from what I have found)
I dont have jbl or limited but if you get a quality unit there wont be any issue with bluetooth. I am using pioneer x920bt with great result. Bluetooth is clear and the other end can hear me well. Dont use xm or hd radio so i cant comment.
Thanks, I'm going to look into this. I looked up your Pioneer Model, looks Nice! Does this Stereo sync to My Droid (Hotspot/Tether) and did you move your back up camera and display? How is that Nav for it?
Sorry for all the questions, just doing my research before I buy. My main purpose is to make sure I have better reception. I know, my son's car goes through the same area I do and his reception never cuts out like mine does...This is key for me....
That will be a wonderful addition but replace the speakers in addition if you want good sound. The OEM speakers are not up to the task when you boost the signal to them.
My unit, with back up camera hook up, will auto switch on when place in Reverse. Navi is OK. I mainly use my cell phone since its most up to date. My unit is getting pretty dated and pioneer has not release any new map update since 2013. I think they are moving away from supporting older unit. No hotspot available on this unit. Bluetooth sync with contacts and will stream music or radio from your phone. That maybe something you may consider. If you have unlimited data that is. Then you don't have to worry bout poor reception.
If you want hotspot/tether, I would look into getting an android double din unit. Some members on here are running them. They seem to like it well. If you want to mirror your phone you can look into pioneer AppRadio. Where you can control your phone from the head unit.. Pretty neat. Newer gen AppRadio will have DVD player, if you want your passenger to watch movie its there..
Thanks for all the helpful info! Sorry it took so long to respond, been working a lot and no time to get on line...I really appreciate your advice and information you've given me...it was very helpful!
We have a 2007 with the factory JBL system and a 2012 that originally had the factory Navigation package which we replaced with a Pioneer AVIC-8100NEX. The AVIC8100 is Pioneer's top of the line model, so it may be more than you are looking for, but I'll answer your specific questions in how it compares:
1. FM Reception
Our AVIC-8100 has HD-Radio and Pioneer's Supertuner IIID technology. It's reception is WAY BETTER than the factory reception in either of our Rav's were stock. I work in a valley and I have parked both our Rav's in the parking lot side by side. There are stations that our 2007 factory system barely picks up (you can hear parts of the song and lots of static). Our AVIC-8100 tunes those same stations in crystal clear. I would guess that HD-Radio and Supertuner IIID are available on any new Pioneer model you would look at.
2. XM Reception
We hooked our existing factory roof mounted XM antenna to the SiriusXM SXV300v1 Connect Vehicle Tuner Kit, which is the XM Tuner for most aftermarket radios today. The XM Reception is exactly the same as it was with our factory navigation unit. It has a few places that it always cuts out (like for a second or two when backing into our garage), but otherwise the reception is great.
3. Bluetooth call quality
I use hands-free Bluetooth every day. Calls are MUCH CLEARER for the person on the other end when I'm calling from our 2012 RAV with the AVIC-8100 and Poineer microphone than they were with either of our factory systems. Again, the same Bluetooth and microphone are probably provided with any new Pioneer model that you would look at.
I'm having similar luck with the Kenwood DDX9902s - the model that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. XM is on a seperate antenna, and reception is maybe slightly worse than the factory XM, but not enough to be an issue. Radio reception is much much better, and the HD radio is crystal clear. Bluetooth is also much better, and a big part of that depends on how the mic is mounted, and the quality mic provided. if you want to be extra sure to get great reception, upgrade to a powered microphone. I also have the JBL system, and with the amp, the speakers sound much improved over the stock unit, though i still might upgrade the speakers in time.
