2009 Navigation System

For anyone who has the Navigation system that came installed in the 2009 Limited - can you tell me if there is a way to have the voice tell the street names as you come up to them. All mine does is say "turn left" in the voice activation. I had been using a Garmin portable GPS for the past two years and it voiced all the details including the name of the street. I can't find anything in the manual that says that it can or can't be done. My husband is legally blind and it is so useful for him to get an idea of where we are by listening to the GPS. Mine does say if we are coming up to a major highway - for instance "turn right onto interstate 9 North" but not in the case of town street names. Any help would be appreciated.

Almost 100 visits but no one knows if the navigation system can actually speak the street names? I have a call into the dealer but no response back from them yet either. I fooled around with the system yesterday but still can't get it to name the actual street. Hoping someone here can help. Thanks.

Same Experience

I have the same problem with my 2009 Rav4 factory installed GPS. My $200 NUVI tells me the street name, but the built in Rav4 GPS does not and I can't find a way to enable it. I was going to check to see if I could update the firmware. My guess is that the OEM for this unit didn't was to pay licensing for text-to-speech, although frankly how expensive can that really be? Otherwise the unit is excellent, but this is a huge flaw.

No. The backup camera display is in the rear view mirror. It works well in this location.

This is my first car with a built in navigation, so I wanted to know if there's a way to put in a destination without having to come to a
complete stop. I realize that this is a safety feature I just wanted to know if it can be turned off....Thanks

There is an aftermarket kit that will allow you to search for POIs while moving. I don’t have it, but it looks like it will work. Here is a link to it:

My 09 has Version 7.1 DVD (or 7 something... whatever). The new DVD is V. 9.1 (whatever again). Its vehicle specific and costs about $270.
Its not that so many streets changed, but the POI changes are incredible with businesses closing and changing hands.

I'll have to get one soon.

That link for the "moving override". Interesting, but not worth it. I usually don't have to decide while going 65 MPH. I'm sure someone will buy it, but not a "must have." Sort of like texting while driving... for idiots only.

I have a 2010 and it does not speak the street name also. I have used and played with the nav a lot and I did not see any way for it to say street names. I try to switch on the turn list when navigating in unfamiliar places so I can read the next few turns. Same way as the lower end Garmins. Too bad, my less than $300 Garmin 1490T beats the $2,000+ factory nav in almost all aspects.
