Easily installed remote start?

2008 RAV4 Base 2.4L

I'm wanting to surprise my wife with a remote start installed on her RAV4. I'm not electrical savvy enough to go cutting on the wiring harness and I'd rather not try that anyways. I was wondering if theres a good aftermarket system out there that maybe just plugs into the existing system? I have read somewhere that possibly the Automate system does this, but not sure. I'd actually like to install the OEM VIP system, but the cheapest I have seen is $330 and it only shows a picture of the key so I don't know if everything comes with that.

Thanks for your help!

Check with your local auto stereo/tint/alarm shops for that remote start. A stupid thing about the Toyota remote start is that the engine shuts off when you unlock the door so it must be restarted......how dumb is that? The Toyota system won't work in really cold weather and they say that it is normal. Go aftermarket, get a better system, pay them to do it properly......simple.

Using the search feature here will yield more information, that's what I did.

How much should a good system cost me? I'd imagine this won't affect the Used Certified Powertrain Warranty would it? Also, what are the better systems out there?

I'll leave that to others because I don't know the brands that well. I have a trusted stereo shop that handles all of that stuff. They have never stung me so I go with the manager's recommendation. Check your local shops or over in Beaumont. That's not a long drive is it?

Had Best Buy in Anchorage install a Viper basic remote by on my brother-in-laws 2008 Base V6. Cost me just over $300 and saved me spending half my two-week Alaskan vacation doing it myself.

I know electronics and had done an add-on remote on our 2006 previously. Took forever but at least I didn't blow anything out.

In other words, DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME! If you do it WILL be a BIG surprise, but not the kind she wants.

I agree.
I have done a few mods to my rav, including adding fog lights to my Base model
I added heated seats from scratch but I paid $375 to have my remote starter installed. I know when NOT to try something!

I need the car almost everyday and I could do the work only in the weekend. I don;t think I would be able to do it in that time. Also places like BestBuy give you lifetime installation warranty. Who do you go to when the remote stater starts acting up?

Just food for thought.

in my eyes you really have two options. you can either get the OEM remote start installed from the dealer. but i have read they charge anywhere from $500-$1000 just for that. and the OEM system is not great.

my best advice is to get the viper 5902 series. i know you want something simple. but im telling you, this alarm is the best! i love it. it has a great distance; stated at 2 miles. also have a feature to use an application on your apple, blackberry or andriod device but thats something like $100 a year. but besides that the stock distance is great. you want to start up the car when you get out of work not when you are 10 feet away. doesnt really have any use. i honestly love the system and people always ask questions about it and end up loving it.

I'm stationed in Italy and had a guy who thought he knew what he was doing but couldn't get the remote start to work. I'm headed to Elmindorf, Alaska. Should I wait to get the system installed when I get there?
