I am in the process of hooking up the rear view backup camera and I want to know how to open the rear door panel. I don't want to break any tabs during this process. I know a couple of users had one it already. If you have any advice or tools to recommend, I would appreciate it.
-How do you run the video cable to the front of the dash board? Which side of the car is better? yes, I had read the post about backup camera already. thanks |

The black plastic panel inside on the back just uses those plastic friction plugs. Start from the bottom corners with a trim removal tool and work your way up. The top corners of the black plastic panel come up to the plastic pillars around the window and hook into them. Be sure to unplug the inside tailgate light from the black plastic panel before trying to remove the panel completely.
If you are doing a camera in/around the license plate area and you have a non-sport model with spare tire on back, remove the two rear license plate screws and plate first, then slowly pull the plastic license plate panel starting from the bottom left of the tailgate. This panel will not easily come off completely but pulling it out of the 3-4 plastic clips will allow you to get in there to run wires. I have the factory backup cam, but tapped into the video cable to run to my aftermarket nav so I could watch the trailer while driving. However, the stock Toyota wiring shuts the cam off after exactly 1min after the reverse signal stops going to it. My solution was to find the power lead to the camera and splice in my own power wire to keep it on at all times. I got a voltage divider to take the power down to the original 6volts and ran that power wire inside my tailgate and replaced the factory power wire with my own. Careful on pulling the outside panel off, I broke part of 2 of the 4 clips that hold it on. Luckily the license plate screws do a great job of keeping it all tight, better than the clips. Also, when you run the wire to the tailgate, just pull the rubber accordion out of both the door and the body to run your wire through. That thing is TIGHT inside and you will hurt your fingers trying to squeeze the wire through. Helpful tip, after you pull it out of the door and body, scrunch it up, and take a small adjustable wrench or anything thin, strong that has a loop hole at the end and stick it through the rubber hose, tie your wire through the hole at the end of the wrench and pull it back through the hose. Also, run the cable down the passenger side. That is the side that the factory camera uses and is the same side that you will be running through to get to the tailgate. Hope this helps.

I bought one of these 6 pc Trim Remover Set | Princess Auto and found the pronged one, 3rd from the bottom worked best for the rear door and sill. Really just slide it in around the plug and it pops out and just work your way around (I've never really removed trim before installing this HU and did not break anything).
Read the Henhao thread from about page 25 as there's lots of info in regards to wiring the camera... |

Thanks a lot. My goal is to setup the camera and not break anything. Usually it doesn't end the way I want it. I will have a broken clip with scratches all over my hands.

With all due respect to Mike, you should start with the gray trim around the window, then work your way down to the black panel. Here's an excellent post with pictures from our friends across the pond:

I am at the point of running wiring for additional back up LEDs and am thru the flex conduit between the door and the body. Does anyone know where the wiring goes from there? I'm wanting to get to the right tail light. It doesn't look to go outside the cabin underneath. It would be nice if I didn't have to remove all of the interior panels but it is what it is.
