whining noise from rear end

I purchased a used 2010 rav4 base model 4 cylinder engine. It is AWD.

I had the wheels aligned and balanced and oil changed. But I noticed there is a whirring/whining sound coming from the rear end. When you start driving from a stop it is low pitched and as you increase in speed the pitch gets higher.

The guy at Meineke told me the sound appears to be coming from the rear differential. He said these are known for this sound and Toyota has a TSB out on this topic. He suggested that if I ignored the sound that it would eventually lock up.

I am not really interested in "throwing parts" at it until the noise finally goes away. What would you do to confirm the source of the noise?

How many miles? If there is a TSB then a dealer could confirm it then possibly perform the service for free. Any remaining warranty should still be intact also.

There is only 19000 miles on it. The vehicle has a rebuilt title and I am not the original owner. I am used to warranties no transferring on basically everything so I'd be surprised if the warranty transfers on this one.

It's worth finding out. If the powertrain warranty is still intact this might be covered.

If you read the warranty details it specifically states any vehicle that was issued a salvage title is not covered. I wonder when you go to a dealership and they try to get something covered under warranty that would normally be covered under warranty how much research do they do on the car's history before determining if the warranty is voided such as running like a carfax report to check for previous accidents?

Take it to the dealer. Many times their database is not updated to show the car was salvaged.

Also, you could try to change the Rear Differential lube. $10 of lube. 1 hr labour. You could do it yourself if you want and see if it helps.
