Newbie. First post, and of course I'm hat in hand with a problem. I apologize. I'm a frequent poster on another enthusiast site, dedicated mostly to older cars and older guys, I'm afraid. I've torn apart and assembled 50s and 60s engines, gearboxes and differentials but I'm out of my league on newer cars like my wife's 2008 RAV4 V6. 190,000 kms. Maintained by the book. Wondering if you younger guys can do an old gearhead a favour and toss in your impressions. I'd appreciate it, though reciprocity depends on how old the Jag in your driveway is.
A few months back the engine started that 1.5 second timing gear rattle on cold startup, maybe 5% of the time. Engine otherwise ran smooth and powerful. This is a great engine. Anyway then after a couple hundred kms three trouble lights on: VSC, 4WD and engine, for several kms, then off again. Brought it in to the local shop and he did a diagnostic. Changed out one of the four camshaft OCVs. Rattle went away. Everyone's smiles and chuckles. A couple weeks later a new rattle. Not as loud but a lot longer in duration. 10 seconds. 20 seconds. Same location at the front of the engine. Not on startup but after the oil had heated up. It ran fine for the first 10 km or so. Trouble lights off and on, mostly off. This was followed by a flickering oil pressure warning light so the car's now parked. New diagnostic (me, this time) indicated problems with two of the remaining OCVs. Changed out, no joy. Newest diagnostic indicates a fault in the one of the same OCV locations. Something else is happening here.
Starts right up and runs a charm. Once warmed up to operating temperature and applying the throttle in Park, oil pressure light is off from idle to about 1000 rpms, then starts to flicker. As rpms climb up to 2000 rpm the flicker morphs into solid on. At 2800 rpm the light goes out. Oil pressure light comes on with load. All the while the engine is responding well. Dropping the throttle produces a short rattle in both valve banks.
5W30 Oil changes every 5K kilometers, so there will be no appreciable sludge in the engine. Piece of crap plugging an oil line seems unlikely. Failing oil pump? Toast bearings? Your wisdom please, oh learned ones.
Seriously, thanks. Come visit sometime at the Jag-Lovers site.
