Steering "creaking" noise when turning slowly - 07 4.3

Hey gang,

I posted a similar question a while back and am checking again to see if anyone (new) has experienced this issue. For what it's worth, Im in Canada (not that it would make a diff).

Anyways, I have the V6 Sport 4.3 (07). After a few months in, I noticed that when turning slowly (eg parking, going in and out of my driveway etc), that the steering column creaks. It sounds like it is coming from either the steering column or the steering components / left front area. I took it to a local dealer 2 months ago, and after a frikking day in the shop, they claim they could not hear anything.. I dragged the CSR out and drove him around in it - of course it was there and obvious.

The problem is always there, and does not matter if its cold or hot out. Anyone else experience this issue? I have not seen any related TSB's... It is not the same as the steering knock that I have heard others describe. This sound ocurrs for the duration of my turning the steering wheel at slow speeds.

Search for the dreaded steering knock - Toyota is not addressing this issue as of now and it seems to be very common. Armwrestle with your dealer and they may swap parts, part numbers are all over the forum here (lower upper steering shaft etc.).

Hey Rav4 owners,

I've been searching the net regarding the same problem I have with my Hyundai Elantra.

Looks like im not the only one frustrated by this stupid creak coming from my steering.

I've taken mine to the dealer 4 times and taken it to two different dealers and they all tell me that there is no noise. Dispite me then showing them and they notice it.

What are they going to do about it? probably nothing.

I'm taking my Elantra to a steering specialist to see what they think.

It's a common problem with the 01-06 Elantra's and a few members on the club forum im from have noted the problem and gotten no where as well.

Wish you luck finding the problem mate.

Cheers
Dean.

Listen I know what the problem is and its pretty common on toyota's I have these come in the dealer about 2 of them a week.On the bottom of the steering colum by where it goes through the floor there is a black boot around the base of the colum the rubber boot will dry out and squeek or creak if you will.what you want to do is get some type of thick grease at toyota we have some in a tube and put it in where the colum goes in the boot just push it in ther move your wheel around a little and your good.

I have a 2006 V6 Sport 4WD and WAS facing the very same problem. I recently went back to the dealer, before my 36k miles up, and surprisingly they fixed the problem. Apparently they have a TSB for this and this is what the report said after it was fixed:

Cause: NVH SUSP (TSB SU009-07)
Parts: 431151 FRT shock absorber assy 1-sd r&r
523 w93
2 48131-42520 Spring, Coil, FR
2 48331-42050 Bumper, FR spring
2 48334-42010 Plate, Bumper, FR NO

"Performed TSB-SU009-07. Removed front shocks and replaced front springs, bumper, and installed D A plastic sheet on both front shocks. Tighten all bolts down. Torq front wheels to 85FT LB. reset tire pressure to 33psi. Perform 4 wheel alignments. Chamber and caster good. Front and rear tow is out of adjusted. Adjusted back to factory spec. Road test. Good no noise."

I believe that if you bring all these #s and lingos that they can at least figure out what to replace. I understand your frustrations completely as I went through the same thing. But it is 100% fixed now! Let me know what I can do to help.

Is this TSB published somewhere - very important would be:
- Release date
- FWD, AWD or both effected?
