HELP!! Car wont start after running out of gas

I ran out of gas yesterday, filled with a gallon and got home. This morning it will not start. It cranks with full force but will not start. I thought maybe it needed more gas, so I put 3 more gallons in and the same thing.

Any suggestions?

Probably the fuel pump is toast, tho how you drove home I can't explain. Maybe it was in stress on the way home and locked up while sitting overnight.

Without adequate fuel to submerge it, the pump will run hot and may burn out or seize. That is the main reason I do not like my fuel to get below about 1/8. Running dry is VERY bad news for fuel pumps.

Unless you are able to pull the fuel pump yourself, I think you had better plan on having the RAV4 towed to a dealer or other shop. Some vehicles have an access panel in the cargo floor - I dunno if the RAV4 has one. If not, you will have to lower the tank with the vehicle on jack stands or a lift.

Good luck.

Not sure if this is related to your issue, however, the owners manual mentions a fuel pump shut off system, which can occur after the engine stalls or after an air bag deploys. It also mentions how to reset it (with your key positions). It mentions to check under your RAV4 for leaks before trying to restart it.

Well, when I turn the key to "On" I hear a humming from under the car, so I assume the fuel pump is working.

I would not continue to try, have it towed to the dealer and let them fix it.

get a fuel pressure gauge and test the fuel rail pressure. You may have an air bubble in the line. Usually cycling the key on for 5 seconds then off without starting the car works to rebuild fuel pressure. Do that about 6-10 times and it may work. Dont crank the starter too long without letting it cool. You'll be buying a starter also. good luck.

This 4 banger actually tows.

It could be moisture in the fuel line from condensation inside the fuel tank.
