Whining noise at 40-50 mph solved? (updated on 8/26/10: TSB is out)

Thanks for the photo. I assume that the pictured trans is the old defective unit. It appears to have the code 42141. Mine has the same code. The new 'H' model should have the 4H202 code I trust?

Did they let you keep your old tranny?? Or is that the new tranny??

No, they don't let you keep the old tranny, it goes back to be re-manufactured into the "H" model. I snagged a bunch of tranny pics of both the U151E (2WD) and U151F (4WD) from a thread on this forum. A member here who was selling these said they came from the RAV4 EV prototypes. Luckily I saved the pics because they were deleted from the original post.

Update: If you would recall, I had my tranny replaced with 42202 by the dealer. I told them to replace it per TSB. 4H202 now installed but with with a problem. What would you do?

I would take it back and have them put it up on the rack and find out where the transmission fluid was leaking from.

OK so I went to the dealer today and had the car up on the rack. Apparently, that leak that I saw was not the transmission fluid; it was the lube residue from the factory which is to be expected for the first few days of use after a tranny replacement. I'm relieved now.

HUH? What residue? My transmission was clean shiny metal as I watched it being removed from the box/palette.

I don't know what to say but I actually saw the tranny coming out of the box and the internals were lubricated. And the MT also showed me some kind of a lube that he had to apply during replacement. Incidentally, it is the same color as the tranny fluid.

My 1998 rav4 has the same problem (slight whining noise when the gas pedal is pressed around 65 mph, no noise if gas pedal is not pressed). i.e it happens only when the drive train components are under load. Can anyone summarize the solution or source of the noise to me before I read this 100 pages long thread? Should I be worried or forget about it?

This is essentially about a service bulletin for some 2006 and forward V-6 five speed automatic transmissions. Although the symptoms are similar it has nothing to do with a 1998 RAV four cylinder.

The RAV 4.1 section would be the correct area to ask your question. This is the 4.3 section which is for newer models. Good luck in finding and correcting the problem.
