Engine knock

I have a 2006 Rav 4 4cy, limited, 53,000miles. Itís got an engine noise similar to a volkswagon tdi, (like a lifter knocking, even though this thing doesnít have lifters), which I can only hear from the passenger side wheel well. I took it to the dealer, and they said it was normal, until a lady pulled in behind me (same model, year and engine), and I asked her if I could listen to hers, and what do you know, hers doesnít make that sound. Itís not on cold start-up, like what I keep finding when I search. Instead, itís after it is warmed up. The oil level is fine, Iím using castrol 5/50 per the manual , and a Toyota oil filter. It didnít start right after an oil change, or anything. The first time I noticed it was after traveling from Missouri to Florida on vacation. Any clues?

20/50?! Do you mean 20w-50 weight oil? If so, that is too thick of viscosity unless you live in a tropical climate and even then I would question it. Try a lower viscocity synth. oil like 5w-30 and then listen to see if you have noisey lifters.

I can't say whether this would help or not, but I had an '89 Camry that had a persistent nock that sounds similar to what you describe. It started rough when the car had somewhere around 65k miles and was still happening when I traded the car with a 147k miles on it.

What I found was that using a higher octane gas greatly reduced or eliminated the noise.

Engine knock

The dealer did mention that Camrys had an issue with the exhaust manifold, causing a noise, but this supposedly is not the same engine. Wow! You guys are quick to respond. I thought I'd have to wait a few days.

Does the knock happening while driving under heavier load? or at all times, including idle?

Engine knock

From what I can tell, it only does it at idle, and I rarely hear it unless I'm standing on the passenger side. If I have someone rev up the engine, the normal engine noise drowns it out.

First, you said 20w50, now 5/50. What exactly do you use? Is it engine oil in the first place?

Engine nock

Well it's got somethin like honey down dare in that dare tuby lookin thang with the key chain like pull stick on it. Like I said, I was in a hurry when I typed this, and it's my wifes car, so I rarely drive it, and I only change the oil in it, when it's not convenient for her to go to the dealer. So by memory while at work, I tried to remember what oil was in her car. Anyway if we were all so smart, we wouldn't need a forum like this to solve all our woes.

FYI 5/50 is still a bit much. They call for 5/30. And yes your 06 is the same 4cl found in the Camry.
